Resurrect Captain America

It's a leaky, grouchy little bitch!

Further Chevy's confuse me.

This 350 is probably not making any more horsepower than the Captain's 289. So WTH do you get for 61 more cubic inches? More weight?

And the dizzy is in the most inconvenient place.

Nope, if anything a stroked 351W or 351C.

It used to be Chevy parts were cheap and everywhere, but it seems they discovered they can charge more.

I might buy a donor 80s Camaro with a T56. Use what I can out of it and haul the rest to the junkyard.

If I could find a second one I would take the T56 to a local trans shop and have the input shaft replaced for the Captain. He has a T5 now.

Don't discount a jy ls. Dollars to dollars a ls will out perform a nicely built 408. Sad but true.

OK, starting to not be funny. I got the parts for new springs, perches, shocks and front discs. Nice new stuff.

I was also able to find a safe spring compressor. The stuff out there seems to be junk and the kind I remember using years ago when I swore I would never do suspension again were nowhere to be found. I ended up renting one from AutoZone.

Got the drivers side mostly apart. Thought I would just take the perches off without removing the upper control arm. 1/2 hour and one nut off. The other has stripped threads. Just turns and turns without coming off. I think these are all original parts!

So I have now started to remove the upper control arm. What a PITA!

My question is when i get the upper control arm off and cut the bolt off that is stripped can I just get new bolts and nuts from Napa or the hardware store? Do I need to get hardened? Or, like everything is there a kit?

Well, I got the UCA out and the springs. I put the springs next to the new ones. Both springs have been cut. The ones that were in the car are thicker in diameter.

I wonder if I should just clean them up and put them back.

Are there different geometry in the UCA with three screw ball joints and the four screw?

Sent from my XT1030 using Tapatalk

No they are the same geometry. Might as well replace the ball joints while you're at it. You don't want to have to take it apart again.

Funny the springs I pulled are cut too. The old ones are thicker so I think they will ride stiffer. I am going to use the new springs, I think they will sit at least the same.

At some point we want to update the control arms so I'm not doing any work to these I don't have to.

I like the roller arms of John's but I just can't spend the money yet.

You might want to consider John's roller perches. They made a big difference in the way my stang handles. I also bought John's regular u ca that he rework. They have been fine since 2009.

Roller perches and roller control arms are on the list.

The problem is I have to wait for the Mustang budget to build back up.

I need to ditch the York AC compressor, replace the stereo and install EPS with new column and steering wheel first.

Likely to happen next fall.

Oh, I have to have the hood repainted too. I tried to talk Amber into a black super Snake stripe in vinyl, but she doesn't want any stripes at all.

Since she is going to drive it daily when the weather is good, she should have it her way.

When Kelly stopped over, Amber was making a wish list from Kelly's car. So, I have to add a viper alarm system like Kelly's.

Been out of town so I decided to work on the front end some more.

I took the UCA apart so I could grease it well and discovered it really needs to be rebuilt.

Dang it I didn't budget for that to be done right now.

So I know they are cheap and there are better ways to go, but I just got some new ones that were inexpensive.

They will be here Thursday.

So, Thursday, Friday and Saturday will be spent working on cars. I have to do all four corners brakes on the 2012 Durango as well.

Sigh, I just want to be done.

I am however enjoying myself in the garage.

I'll post pics as I put it together.

Tonight I got both sides apart. Tomorrow I'll clean it up and when the new UCAs get here Thursday I'll start reassembly.

Pictures to follow.
