Octane

IMG_7439.JPG when refueling our rental car in Germany I noticed they have much higher octane fuel than we do in the US. Their cheap stuff is 95 and they also have 100 octane.

European gas ratings are different than the US.
Good to know. I learned something. Thanks Mid.
a quick Google shows the most common type of octane rating worldwide is the Research Octane Number (RON). In most countries, including Australia, New Zealand and all of those in Europe, the "headline" octane rating shown on the pump is the RON, but in Canada, the United States, Brazil, and some other countries, the headline number is the average of the RON and the MON which is 4 to 6 octane numbers lower than elsewhere in the world for the same fuel.

At one of the heights of gas prices I refueled at SearsPoint Raceway at their pumps. Nice....and it was cheaper because they sell at the price they buy it at...which was before that latest price gouging.

You just have to move closer to a race track, Craig. There's not much left to claim as good about living in IL but at least we still have 93!

Most states do have 93, I recall one year on the power tour I couldn't find any 93 in Oklahoma and my car was not happy!
I do have access to race fuel in Bowling Green. They have some near the drag strip. I just saw that they had 95 and 100 at all the pumps in Germany and was a bit jealous but as it turns out, the 100 is not far off from our 93. If there were more Ethanol stations I would convert to run on that but not enough stations carry it and I can't switch back and forth. Most E85 is around 100 octane.

113 euro cents a litre is a bit gruesome.
Thats $1.57 AUD or $1.20 cents USD per litre
or $6.67AUD per Metric Gallon or $4.56USD per Imperial Gallon
We are paying between $1.13 to $1.30 Aud per litre here.
Does it vary much there Bruno via a so called "Cycle".

knowing that today's gas and diesel prices are some kind of "cheap" nowedays. ( due to the low economy activity )
there were times it was more expensive !! (prior the bank crisis 2008 )
say 1.50 euro/liter for diesel
and 1.60 euro/liter for gasolin.
I am happy for now with these prices.

actually there is a way to run E85, and switch back and forth between that and ethanol free gasoline. you just need to convert to fuel injection, and install a flex fuel sensor in the system. the megasquirt system has this very option.

yes, there is that option. $$$

actually the megasquirt is not that expensive. if you have some electronics skills, you can build the system from a kit, or you can buy the completed controller for less than $500 for one that controls not only the fuel, but the spark as well, if you so desire.

I may look into that next year. I just spent several thousand on a TKO, aluminum heads and a new cam. But it may be a good investment as I do drive this thing anywhere and everywhere
