The latest Earhart theory....Your thoughts, Midlife?

I have no idea why I have always found the Earhart story fascinating. It just seems strange that there was no wreckage or bodies ever found.

Not exactly what one would call definitive evidence, is it? A long-range photo of someone's back, another of a man with similar physique, and an indistinct object off the fantail of the ship. And the ship? It was an oceanographic vessel, and I have the deck logs of it during the month AE was missing, and it clearly shows them taking oceanographic water casts for samples. No entries for recovering a plane, people, and it was located well outside the Marshall Islands at the time. A radio message was sent, however, to assist in whatever manner it could to facilitate the search. It left the area to return to the Marshalls about the time the US search for AE ended.

Agreed. I thought it was weak "evidence" at best and the plane doesn't look very much like the Lockheed in my opinion although it is very far away.

Does your group get excited at these types of things or have there been so many theories and "evidence" brought up that no excitement happens until there are questions that cannot be answered about said "evidence"? Has there been so much investigation into her disappearance that short of a proven, written document stating what actually happened, with pics, we won't ever know the answer?

There's a post on the TIGHAR forum about this, but mainly when the TV program will be aired. No one from that group has seen the evidence as yet in detail, but they will likely scoff at it due to the concerns I raised above. The photo is apparently undated, which leads to ambiguity of where and when it was taken. I saw a 2 minute NBC Today clip with some "scientific" methods applied to identifying Fred Noonan by his hairline and shape of nose, which is hardly considered proof. Someone stated that the airplane at the back of the ship looks more like a sail boat with the sail boom lowered and sail down as well.

What did Carl Sagan say? Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. Not much here to see...

its a theory that has been bandied about over the decades. the photo just adds a little spice to the theory.

in the end nothing to see here, move along....

I'm pretty sure if a plane was on a barge, somebody would have remembered it and shared the story.

As I recall, the last TIGHAR mission used sonar or such to check for the plane where they believed it rests after tumbling off the shelf where she landed it. That was a long time ago. Why hasn't a follow-up trip happened yet...or did I miss it? I thought some kind of submersible was to be used to make visual confirmation. Seems odd to me that this has yet to happen. Surely the money for such could be scrounged up. Some new internet wunderkind millionaire would likely fund it, no? Nick Cage has dumped more $$$ on dinosaur fossils maybe he would back in exchange for a relic.

A return trip was planned, but the timeframe to raise funds to meet the ship schedule was too short. Right now, a commercial cruise liner is there at the island with a number of researchers to do what they can with limited resources. A full-blown return to Nikumaroro island for 10 days or so is nearly $1.5M just for the ship, let alone fees for any submersibles.

Seems like a waste of money to do anything other than get something in the water to take a look at what the sonar "saw". They will not find anything on the island to prove their theory short of a skeleton that can be 100% identified as one of the two persons involved. If anything was there they should have found it long ago, no? If they had say a third of the money collected why blow it on a half-assed mission instead of holding off for what really needs done?

I bet if they put together a "Fund Me" type page and worked to get the word out they could raise the money. In this day and age of conspiracy theories, ghost hunter shows etc., there are plenty of people who would pay a few bucks to see this one through. Something doesn't smell right. It's too bad because this is one of the great unsolved mysteries that would seem solvable.

Heck using someone else's money for your own adventures is nothing new. Columbus comes to mind. And if something comes of it all the better

Made the mistake of Googling "TIGHAR" out of curiosity. Talk about a shit storm of controversy. Lots more people/experts on the side of calling the whole thing silly (most lean more toward scam and fraud) than holding any belief in their claims. The more I read the more I lean toward the majority view. Too bad. This kind of mystery is always fun to want to follow/believe in. I hate Google.
