"Phoenix" 65 Coupe to FB

qtrs are patched but have alot of cleanup to do. Need to work on my welds better...Maybe i need to adjust my speed to slower not sure but i can not for life of me consitently get a good pattern persaysided.jpg

I hope I'm not repeating something already called out here, but one thing to look into is the wire. I have heard of a few people having poor results until they got some higher quality wire. I got my wire at Harbor Freight and it makes me wonder if that was part of the issues that I've had.

HF wire is crap. Learned it myself the hard way. Same goes for welders. Until you step up to one of the premier top brand names your welding will be challenged. Plenty of proof of that but we all have to work within our budget constraints. Like with all tools, buy the best you can afford. They cost more for a reason and its not just the label.

My eastwood is far better but it will lay a good bead i think im having issues just getting my speed right. I did recently switch wire as i was using Hobart from Tractor supply but they were out some im currently using Lincoln wire from Lowes

I like the Hobart .030 wire. Welds nice, grinds easy, and easy to find. I would also recommend spot welding about 1" apart, and grinding, then fill in between those with a spot, and grind, and continue on. A lot less heat, and makes for a cleaner seam.

Invest in one of these if you don't have one.

Makes grinding so much easier and comfortable.

I have the same hoist. Works great. I went with the stand that folds up to save room. Are you going to stroke the engine or just rebuilt it at stock stroke?

I know little to nothing about engines other then terminology. I know ill have the block machined, prob aluminum heads, and headers but the goal will be to get towards 400HP. I am pretty excited to disassemble my first engine. Up until this point biggest thing ive replaced was a intake

You can get 400 hp out of a 351 without stroking. Just let someone help you with component selection. You want stuff that will work together. For something basic like yours a full Edelbrock top end kit (heads, cam, etc.) might make a lot of sense. I have to tell you a 351 in a '65 is a tight fit with stock shock towers. You will hate plug change day!

I have no doubt about that but i got it via trade and no reason to spend money for something else. My friend knows his stuff, he actually have a pair of aluminum heads and headers that will work for it. They were off his 600 HP build before he decided to go coyote. He said the headers were on before he put his AJE in and shock towers so :)

Be a good idea if you are planning to use his heads to send them, along with the intake you will be using to the machine shop too. You want to have them check the surfaces for flatness, alignment issues etc.

Well im getting things fitted but im having some issues with the front especially on the passenger side. Ive actually got the rocker a little high but it just a few screws holding it on for the moment but you can see what its looking like

Spent the day working on getting the front to fit better. Took Rich's advice from MTF and drilled out all the front spot welds and pushed the fenders out about 1/4" on the bottoms and now have a much better fit. Still going to need some filler and work but not nearly as much.
