For those of you Mustang owners in Australia, how many of have converted to right hand steer?

About 20 years ago I spoke with couple of blokes who were buying parts at Scott Drake Mustang to do the conversion.
 
Frankenstang has been converted using an ED Falcon as a donor car (Quite similar to a Crown Vic).
It scored the motor , gearbox, diff, computer, fuel system, brakes, steering and dash, so its not a very good comparison.
To do a RHD conversion properly takeas a bit of work in a 65 to 70 Mustang.
You have to cut an OZ Falcon Drag link, shorten and reweld, which involves X-Rays for the engineering certification, then you use OZ Falcon tie rod ends & stub axles to correct the bump steer.
Heating and bending stub axles is not allowed in OZ.
The dash has to be removed, the ends cut off then massaged and swapped, then the Facia has to be done, plus Plastic Welding and rechroming.
The firewall has each side cut out, swapped and rehashed.
Dynacorn make a RHD Firewall, but the general consensus is its a piece of shit.
Many cut up a donor OZ Falcon firewall for the bits as swapping doesnt give you heater hoses in the right position, etc.
You need an OZ Ford pedal box.
The chassis has to be drilled and crush tubes welded in to use the OZ steering box.
The heater box has to be dissasembled and the core flipped.
The wipers have to be mirrored to get the sweep correct.
Its not cumpolsory for anything over 30 years old to be converted, but for me it was an easy decision.
If i wanted to drive LHD i would move to the USA.
For an older Mustang the cost is between 8 - 15k, depending on how much work is farmed out.
For something new 00 - 2015 its about 40k.
Thats why the 2015 on new Mustangs are so popular - drive away in a new GT from the Stealership for 56k.
 
scedd, what are the laws for driving LHD cars in OZ? Other than being awkward i would think the cost would prevent most from doing the conversion unless there are some restrictions for importing or driving a LHD car...
 
Restrictions here were a 30 year rolling cutoff date for compulsory conversion to RHD.
That is expected to disappear soon as the main aim was to protect our manufacturing industry, which no longer exists as the dicklickers at Ford, GM & Toyota closed the OZ plants this year.
US Military postings to the base in the Northern Territory were allowed to bring their cars and keep them LHD, but they had to be re-exported when the owner left.
Drive throughs and carpark boom gates are a problem and Random Breath Test sites are a laugh when the copper goes to the wrong door, but the biggest worry is the retards on the road who watch LHD cars thinking there is no driver and then failing to concentrate on Facebook, whoops, i mean their own driving.
The minimum changes for LHD rego used to be changing the seatbelts & headlights (OZ lights dip to the left) and converting indicators to amber.
I put amber lenses on Frankenstangs back up lights and rewired them to become indicators (turn signals).
You can now ignore that, but again the quality of drivers in this country is so
poor that i wouldnt trust them to understand that a flashing red light is an indicator, not a faulty brake light.

I have been three times now and never drove over there yet. I always took a taxi or uber. I have met several Aussies on various Power tours and they all have a lot of fun coming to the US for the tour. But I see those crazy Summer Nats burnout contests on the web and it looks like there is a big car culture is over there too.
There are RHD cars over here but I don't know that we have a federal law on that, maybe individual states do, like Cali. Anything is legal in Kentucky!

Wow!

We are visiting family in Paris and Morocco this year, maybe we should do our winter trip next year down under to visit some of these Mustangs. See for ourselves what it's like.

We will start our planning for next January in February.

I do not know how long you’ll be in Paris, Mel but if you can afford a day, take a Normandy tour. It made me melt

Same here, plus we did villers bretonneux on Anzac Day, very moving
Also pay the extra for the Eiffel Tower, so you dont stand in line with the sheep for 4 hours,
Also come down in the elevator, dont use the stairs (Dont ask my hamstrings how they know),
Also do the Moulin Rouge (very expensive but worth it)
Also go to the louvre to see how small the Mona Lisa is (not big like in the Mr Bean movie)
Also go and see The Palace of Versailles
Also, pop over to Brussels to see Bruno (Its just down the road).
By the way, did i mention how much i loved Paris, its an amazing place.

We want to see the catacombs. We will have a couple days on each end of Morocco.

Our family is there so we will be back. Very excited for Morocco!!! Rugs, spices, fishing, eating Camel, so much to do so little time!

We leave 1/7 so very excited.

On 1/4 we leave for my Grandson's birthday at Disneyland and then to Paris the Morocco the Paris and back to L.A. from there to San Diego to Outlawboss house to pickup some seats and spring perches maybe some Mexican food with Angelo and Katie then to El Centro for more Mexican food and finally home on 1/21.

The following weekend new seats in Captain America.

Gonna need a week off to rest from the vacation!
