Put the hoist back in the budget, its the best thing you will ever do! We took 3 years restoring my sons '65, and I bought a 2 post hoist right after we got it done....probably could have knocked a year off the resto! Depending on what you will be putting on the hoist, 4" concrete with rebar is enough. I located mine 4 ft off the side and 10ft off the back (have a workbench along the back). I stick built my shop 20 years ago, and never built anything before and it took me all summer, its still standing so I geuss I did ok.

Concrete at the lift is 18 inches thick... They dug a hole lol. It was suppose to only be 4 inches but its alot closer to 6 or 7. We ran out of concrete at the front edge and had to get them to bring another yard. We only needed half a yard so we dug it deeper lol. Went over budget on the pad...

Bill:

Congrats on your project. Observation and question: The slope from the road to the pad seems to have some erosion showing. Not sure what sort of annual rainfall you enjoy there but have you considered an intermediate diversion trough or swale part way up the slope that diverts the water from upstream away from your new pad? The French drain at the base of the pad might not be enough.

We are hoping to take some of the slope out. Yes, it has definitely washed so with all the rain I’m able to monitor how everything is working. We built the retaining wall into the pad and put the French drain. If we can remove and soften the slope I think I will be fine. Planning to get some grass and trees on the bank as soon as he dresses everything.

You know. After researching garden swales, I like the idea. After we get everything dressed and I notice any issues then I’ll put one in. Thanks for the info.

Wife said the same thing. From up top it looks small. Once your down in it, I’m happy with the size.

Excited for you, Bill. Has to feel great knowing you have such a nice shop in your very near future. Having the right space makes the work that much more enjoyable.

Thanks Terry. I’m excited to see it getting there. Ready to get it done.

We decided to sheath, tyvek, and vinyl the walls. This thing sure has come along way from the original pole barn that I originally intended to build lol. It should be a very nice structure when complete.

Looking good! It will seem big til you fill it.

You building this yourself or have a crew? I built mine for the most part by myself, took me all summer, wouldn't do it again. I built, squared, and sheathed my walls with them laying flat on the cement and then had a few buddies come over and help me stand them up one evening, then had 2 of them help put the trusses up the next evening. I learned a lot, but was young and dumb.

I’ve got a crew. I subbed it out for different things. Got a crane truck coming for the trusses. I don’t have the skill set to carpenter lol.
