Looking for some advice on paint

WOW! Lots of hard work done and still more to come (well maybe not so hard now) but it's looking great! Thanks for sharing. I love to see these builds

Looks awesome!

Get a proper car cover right away. Blankets and plastic will put fine scratches in that gorgeous paint. Are you planning to leave the car up for a while like that? I'd be a little worried about metal fatigue possibly damaging the rails myself. Neat tool though. Never seen one like that before.

Beautiful color! Can't wait to get mine in the same condition and back home too! Good to see it still coming along

Thanks everyone....Ya i was waiting until the paint was finally done before making an update...its like...all this time has passed, figured id at least post something more interesting then a picture of something underneath they fixed. Which as it turned out was very little. As much as I would have liked to have put the car on a rotisserie, when we stripped everything down and got underneath, we all decided it wasnt worth it. The car had one very small spot of rust in front of the rear axle which was cut out and repaired. The front frame rails were dented up from being used as jacking points, those were repaired. The outer skin of the passenger floor had a dent in it that was also fixed. I guess I was lucky that this car has sat inside since 1974, and had TREMENDOUS oil leaks that coated the underside in a sludge.

ooks awesome!

Agree about the blankets, temporary until my car cover arrives....My painter promised me a full buff out once the car is done...so ill be cashing in on that. With regards to the lift...The car is sitting on frame rails at junction of the torque boxes and has no weight in it (drivetrain, interior, glass, etc)...I mean cant see it being any more detrimental than a car being held by its end points on a rotisserie. The lift is a bendpack MD-6XP. Its a midrise scissor lift. I have had it for about 6 months now and I really like it. I mean its not a full sized side post, but it works great for me. I did all of the measurements and a full sized post lift would have fit in my garage...However, a car on it would not have cleared the beam at full height. Plus I didn't like the idea of permanently mounting the lift to the floor and having to drive in and out of it all the time. I liked the the portability of this lift, I can move it around my garage by myself. It goes high enough that I can sit on my rolling stool and work...or stand to do things like brakes and such. It has its drawbacks such as the center of the car not being as open as it would be on a sidepost...if you have a low car, you will need to run a couple of boards alongside to drive on to clear the collapsed height. Beats the S**t out of laying on the floor ill say that much.

Here's a question for you guys....I pulled these strut rods off the other night...are they supposed to be exactly the same driver/side passenger side? Looks to me that one of mine is different/bent slightly. I have seen replacements for sale and they say they fit either driver/passenger side...So my assumption was that they are supposed to be identical and one of mine is bent.

67 mustang have straight strut rod as 68 mustangs have the ones with a bent.
If looking for other strut rod , I would choose the 68 ones as you won't have any clearance issues when putting a bigger front sway bar.
Right ? Correct me if I am wrong but thats what I remember doing my mustang.
Something like this :

Interesting....this would actually make some sense....ill explain.

While my father died in 95, a few years ago, I found and got in touch with one of his old car buddies. He was older than my dad and taught him alot about cars. Helped him build his super stock car, later worked for him on the side when my dad had a repair shop/gas station. Id say hes about 75 now...He is 100% anti computer and internet, but I do usually call him every few weeks and we chat on the phone...mostly about car stuff...old stories about him and my dad....(things my dad would have NEVER told me...like stories about his old GF's, etc..funny stuff) Anyway, he was telling me about when my dad bought this car...The drivers fender was dented and they went to the junkyard and found a fender off of a white 68 mustang...when I removed the paint, I confirmed his memory was correct. He also told me he put new strut rod bushings on the car, changed the clutch, few other things...his memory is pretty ridiculous. So im wondering now if perhaps the original strut rod was damaged and they grabbed the one off of this 68 along with the fender. Ill have to ask him next time we speak. This whole process has been quite a trip down memory lane for me. I got in touch with a few of my dads old friends who i hadnt seen in like 30+ years. They have all been very happy to find out that I kept his car and am restoring it. So its really motivating me to finish it.

The car is looking really good.

For sure. Its been really great reconnecting with these guys and talking about my dad with them. I was 18 when my father died, so at that time we were going thru the probably typical...Me=a**hole teenager who knew everything, my dad butting heads with me all the time bc I didnt have much direction and I was being lazy. So I missed out on having some adult conversations with him. Ill share a story with you guys that was pretty crazy....

So when it came to picking this color blue, I wanted it to look like the blue my dad had it painted in the 70s...Which was a color her really liked...but I didnt know much about it...I heard him call it "midnight blue" a few times, but thats the only info I had on the color. Oddly enough, I did know the guys name who painted the car back in the 70s....My fathers friend, Ed. I remember my dad talking about him, but I had never met him. He used to paint cars for my dad and his friends, over the years, I guess my dad and him lost touch. A few months ago while im on the phone with his other buddy who I reconnected with, hes telling me about how he ran into one of their old mutual friends, and found out that Ed lives in Denville now...the town next to where I live. But he didnt have any of his contact info...Again my dads friend (Butch) lives in the stone age. So im like wow...I have been driving the mustang thru this town for 20+ years, odd I would have never run into Ed. So I went on facebook and look up Ed...sure enough, he has a profile...AND hes a mutual friend with one of my car buddies...craig...So I text Craig and im like hey, how do you know Ed..etc...(they have different last names) So hes like, thats my dad (techincally step dad)....Im like WTF? Dude, your dad painted my car....Then I sent him this 8mm film my Dad had made of his Dad painting my fathers super-stock 67 fastback in ~1969...Totally blew his mind.

So he gets in touch with his dad (ed), sends him the video and asks "hey do you know this guy in this movie?" Too funny. So I get in touch with Ed, and we have a great laugh about how I have been friends with his step son for 20+ years and never knew his dad painted my car lol. I did try racking his brain about the shade of blue he painted it, but he had no memory of it. He laughed...Dude, you know how many cars I have painted in the past 40 years? We had actually met a few times in the past, but I never put it together. When I first started discussing this project, I was talking with my friend craig once at a party and he said to me...you know my dad paints cars on the side, I would say ask him but hes getting older now so he probably wouldnt want to take on something like this now. Would have been too funny to have the same guy paint the car twice.

the strut rods both look like 67's (bent maybe but still 67's). The 68 is really different and wouldn't fit the 67 LCA. 68's pictured below.

?? I had no problem switching to 68 strut rods on mine.
The LCA I have are the one with 4 holes located nearby the balljoint.

agreed, if you use the 68 and up LCA the 68 and up strut rods fit great. 67 was a one year only for both the LCA and strut rod
