New Project! 1968 Volvo P1800 "Bullwinkle"

A little more progress on the grill. It still needs the chrome trim fabricated and mounting tabs to mount the grill in place. I think it will have a nice look when completed. As a contrast I have also posted an original grill. The difference is pretty noticeable. 6b0e7896ef94adb66d49fd1a42be0722.jpg24cf9bf471d043e0908c143410bb96df.jpg

The grill and trim around it has been completed. The trim will eventually be chromed. They started working on the lower valance grill. The lower valance will use an original grill the has been straightened. The headlights have also been mounted.

Work has also started on the gas cap. It will use a flush mount cap that is normally on motorcycles. It will be mounted on the top of the left rear quarter panel similar to the original only closer to the rear window. Pictures to follow........

I have also placed an order for front and rear flush mount glass. To get the ball rolling I had to buy 3 prototype sets so if anyone is looking for a set let me know. I am basically looking at dividing my cost by 3. I had to go this way in order to get glass by the time I needed it.

Thanks. I tallied up the hours of metal work done so far by the body shop and it is over 1600. That doesn't even count the hours I put in repairing the floor, mini-tub, transmission tunnel, driveshaft tunnel and firewall. It must be close to 2000 hours of metal work alone. This has gotten out of control!

It is an amazing car, but I certainly hope that body shop hourly rates are way cheaper up there than they are down here...ouch!

I haven't told you guys yet but my real name is Parker Schnabel from Gold Rush.

The front end is pretty much done. We are waiting for the wheel to finish the machine work to increase the bore size before it can be put back on the ground.

The gas filler is almost done. It will require a little shaping to contour to the body and will eventually be painted body color instead of chrome. It is a style often used on motorcycles and pops up when yo push it. It is pretty slick and smooth.

We have also decided on the paint color. It will be painted Aston Martin Tungsten Silver. It looks a little darker in this picture than it really is. When I look at it in other pictures and in daylight it is a bit lighter.

We started discussing the door handles today. You know you are in trouble when your body guy says, "With all the body mods you have made it would be a shame to leave the door handles stock." More on that to come..............

That style pop-up fuel filler is used by Dave Kindig on almost every ride I've seen built on the show. It's pretty slick. Downside is that you have to actually use an actual gas pump nozzle to fill with gas. Given the location chosen, was thought and measurement taken into consideration as to placement? Looks like the nozzle handle will be contacting the quarter when in use. Better include a storage space for a towel in the trunk to use to cover things up at the pump.

Personally, I wouldn't go with flush or shaved handles. Chrome pieces match up well with the chrome bumpers. Leave that to the monochromatic rides. Nice color choice.

The gas cap will not interfere with the body structure. It will ve vertical when filling and there is a curve to the tube as it enters the trunk area. I will add a small section of 3M clear bra to protect the paint where the filler goes into the body. That way the boot on the pumps will not scratch paint. I am more worried about the possibility of water entering the system when the cap is removed.

As far as the handle goes it will use the stock handle but modified. We have a custom trim that will run the length of the quarter panel and the original handle tied into this. We will fill the voids in the back side of the handle so that we can continue the flow of the trim like the original handle did. After the handle is filled and reshaped we will chrome it again. If that plan doesn't work we will use the other style of original handle that does not tie into the trim.

There is a little delay but n the fabrication of the upper control arms but the front crossmember is welded. I am told it will be 1-2 weeks before it will be ready to ship. It is starting to get exciting! Thanks Ron Sutton Race Technologies!

Here are a couple pictures of the car on the ground. It will be slightly lower in the front and higher in the rear when it is at ride height. The hood isn't on in the picture since they were installing the new hinges. The original hinges got lost at the shop at some point. The splitter will be about 4.5" off the ground when done.

Anyone have a measurement on an original car from the front nose sheetmetal where it ends below the bumper to the ground?
