these college basketball n football players make me puke. The # of tattoos they have are pathetic.

When I was in college, I was just happy to have a roof over my head.

I, me, mine

At the risk of sounding like a crotchety old man...

What is the deal with tats and piercings and people these days? Finding a young twenty-something that isn't all inked up and perforated is virtually impossible. For a generation that likes to think they are all individual and unique they sure do seem to act like lemmings. Do they not recognize how those choices have and will limit them the rest of their lives in terms of opportunity? I do not pass over candidates at work because they have tattoos, I see them and let the interview process confirm my suspicions about their character. I won't even touch on what a little search into their social media activities typically reveals. There is a reason there are millions of 'em marching in support of a ridiculous minimum wage.

I have a few tattoos but knowing how many feel about them I have tried to keep them where when dressed for business they are not visible (other than one on my hand). I am old too so I don't care as much any more what people think. My wife has a few as well but again I think they are tastefully located. She did a lot of them when she was younger but still gets a new one occasionally. Hers are more noticeable than mine especially in summer when wearing shorts and so on.
However, I can see your point. Many tatted up people do fit a stereotype. But just like anything else, we all have our opinions. Tats don't bother me.

This is a case of "If I didn't do it then why should others". Who cares. If you want a tat fine. If you think it sets you apart, fine. Please note if they are not hurting you then what does it matter?

What I dislike is when they have so many it is distracting. I am ADD and I have problems with getting distracted. If I am paying to see something, I do not want to be distracted with other things.

That is where I come from.

My tat on my hand is actually my wedding date. It's on my ring finger. I can't wear jewelry in factories and so after being married a couple years my wife complained that I never wore my ring. I kept it on my key chain so I wouldn't lose it. So I had the bright idea of getting a tattoo. She loved it. Now I just tell everyone it's my prison number...

You pretty much are missing the entire point of the issue with all the ink. Ask just about anyone why they got a tat and the answer will be some version of expressing themselves, individuality etc. Fact is in this era being void of ink would better fit that definition. I don't care if someone has tattoos. Their business. I DO CARE if they want to represent my business interests and have a drawing on their neck. I have personally found candidates with excess ink or piercings typically score unfavorably on testing we require and do not excel in the interview process. Boils down to, in my mind, decision making processes and character traits. They might be great people in social situations but not so much in my business world. That's all. 20 years from now maybe all the people running things might be covered in tats and the coin flipped but in this day and age there is a reason they find themselves working at a coffee shop making latte's.

I discourage my kids (21 and 24) for having a tattoo, because it limits your chances of a good job , even here in Belgium thats true.
I personally don't get the idea of having a tattoo.

No I think we make the same point. If THEY who are wearing the ink are hurting you meaning your business or the like then you do not employ them. They made the choice and by you NOT hiring them it is hurting them not you. Its ok with me if THEY wear tats. How I make my decision of how I interact with them is my business. And personally I take that on a case by case basis. I do not condemn anyone based on a generalization. And if I do and am called out on it. I rethink my position.

I don't have ink and I'm close to that age group at 36. I don't have anything against them but never felt the need for one.
I do get what terry is saying. When I see a guy with a neck tattoo I immediately think felon or future felon lol.

once again i dont care if someone has tattoos or not, i dont judge people by skin color, gender, religion, politics, or body art. i judge people on the content of their character.

I completely disagree. These kids getting tattoos which cost hundreds of dollars, when they work in a 0.99 cent store. Grow up n get a well paid job vice decorating yourself with ink based Christmas ornaments. Time to grow up n make a difference. QED

Need I say more? I will not. My daughter will not. Wife has thought about covering some scars with tats.

I do. The only opinion i am interested in is mine. Tattoos belong on Pirates & Cannibals. Cover yourself with scribbles & drawings, dont come asking me for a job. Will i truthfully tell you why you didnt get the job? Shit no, im not that silly.

Completely agree. The point I am making is that when judging this character those with all the ink and piercings almost always are the ones who do poorly on the psychological testing (almost every company does some sort) and in the person to person interviewing process. Like I said, many are nice people. Many seem at least competently educated but takes a certain type of person to willingly get a full sleeve done or have ink placed anywhere above their shoulders in plain view. Usually one who does not possess the forethought to consider long term ramifications and social implication. Sure their 20 something peers with similar markings all find it "cool" but those are not the people with whom they will be seeking a paycheck and publicly representing someone else business...are they?

How many guys here did stuff when they were 20ish that they look back and find stupid now? In the Eighties just about every guy was getting his ear pierced. How many of you/them sport dangles from your ear today? I hope the answer is none. Losing a sleeve is a bit more involved than pulling a stud out of your ear.

Just to be clear, get that awesome mustang tat on your upper arm Your wife's name across your heart. Maybe you served and wear proudly a EGA tat on your forearm. Cool. None of that type of thing is what I/we are discussing here. There is a certain level of professionalism that gets lost when the ink gets out of hand.

Live and let live.

I hired and work with a gal who has abundant tattoos, but I've never commented on them. She is extremely bright, and is one of the best configuration managers I've ever run across, and recommend her highly to anyone. I spent a lot of energy to hire her this year after she was let go due to lack of frunds on another program, and won't regret it whatsoever that I hired her. She is top-notch in her field, and I don't give a damn about her tats...only that she can do the job (and better than anyone else I've ever encountered).

Just like skin color, or ethnic background, one has to look beyond all of that to find the true worth of the individual. Please don't stereotype people...they deserve better than to be stereotyped.

Now, on the other hand, wait until these women turn 70 and try to wear a bikini with wrinkled skin and tats that have been inked when they were 20....but that is their problem.
