Disti Cap Clips. Help!

RagTop

Old Grumpy
Does anyone have a secret technique for putting the clips back onto a new distributor cap? Since I have electronic ignition it isn't something I've done in a long time and I forgot how hard it is to re-clip the cap. Help!

Standard Ford clips? Some of them can be really tight, I have found that pushing in the middle of the clip (at the bow) while inserting a flat bladed screwdriver into the slot that top and convincing the clip to pop on works fairly well. Not sure my description is clear?!?!

Ken S., are you sure the cap is fully seated on the distributor body (the little notch/tab in particular)?

Ken B's description is similar to the technique recommended for removing and installing the spring clips on an A/C evaporator box without cracking the fiberglass locking tabs. If you want to see what I am talking about check out the YouTube Video by Don Rush (West Coast Classic Cougar) where he refurbishes an evaporator box from a Cougar.

That is exactly the method I remember using in the past. I tried that yesterday and no joy. Maybe my hands are too weak or I was using the wrong screwdriver. I just didn't want to be grappling with this if there was an easier way. Hard to believe that GM came up with a couple of cross head screws to secure their disti caps and Ford arrived at this elegant solution.

I was actually able to apply enough pressure to the clips to get them to snap over the notches in the cap. I guess I'm just getting weaker in my old age.

I did not watch the video...but I think it is saying to stick screwdriver tip in the clip and put clip in the slot on the cap....
