I can't get this cotton picker out!

I put the engine in first and then the trans. I've had the trans in and out several times in the past. But I can't get the engine out with the trans in the car!!! The motor won't go far enough forward to separate from the trans because of the motor mounts and I can't raise it enough to clear the mounts because the bell housing hits the firewall/trans tunnel.
I guess I got to drop the trans first. It's all coming out anyway but I was hoping to have the motor out today... Oh well, I'll get it tomorrow.

I remember pulling the 460/c6 out of my car. That is something I never want to do again lol. Definitely remove the trans first. I bent the leg of my cherry picker pulling as an assembly. It is HEAVY.

Have you tried raising the rear end up higher than the front? Usually, that allows better clearance of the tranny from the firewall.

I wouldn't even think of trying to pull them together! My cherry picker probably couldn't lift them as a unit. I unbolted the TC and the bellhousing. I just cant get the motor mounts on the engine high enough to slip over the frame mounts so the motor can go forward and separate from the trans because the tranny hits the tunnel and I just end up lifting the whole car

I have the leveler on the engine and I did try to lift the rear more but the trans is so close to the tunnel/firewall that nothing I can do. If I take the motor mounts off the engine I think, I might get the motor to slide forward enough to come off the trans. The motor mounts that are on the engine are "over" the frame mounts. The tabs (if you want to call them that) keep the engine from moving forward. If I could raise it high enough they would go over the the top but I can't raise the motor enough before the trans hits the tunnel/firewall. Hard to describe but it aint going to come out with the trans still in the car and/or the motor mounts still attached to the block. But the trans has to come out anyway so I might as well go ahead and drop it. I just thought I'd try to pull motor first.

I saw a fastback where they cut the top of the radiator support then fabricated it to bolt in. It gave a hole lot of room. I will try too find the pics.

started pulling engine apart. The main bearings ans journal are scored. I suspect it might have been from metal filings going thru the engine. I'll pull the crank, measure it and see if I can polish it. Might need a regrind. I'm going to mic the bores too. Maybe time to find a 460 crank, bore it and make a 466 out of it...

Well I got it tore down. I'm going to take the crank and block to my machine shop and have him inspect the crank. I'm going to go ahead and have the block bored. There is some scoring on the cylinders and pistons so I hope we can just go .030" over. It's a standard bore right now. I'll take my heads too and have check spring pressures.

I'm glad I didn't just slap on new rockers and go on the Power Tour with this thing. I believe when the rockers began to fail they sent some trash thru the motor. Oil pan looked clean but I did find damage on three of the screw-in studs and all the rockers had damage to the ball pivot seat. I'm guessing my scoring issues are from very fine debris that was generated from the failure and pumped thru the engine in the oil.
The guys on 460.com say it could have been an oiling problem. They say BBF's are prone to over shoot the oil from the pushrods past the rockers. The 429 CJ and SCJ valve covers had oil deflectors built in. Later model BBF's went to a pedestal fulcrum. They say the full roller doesn't need as much oil due to less heat build-up. I guess they might be on to something. You can see some of the rockers got pretty hot and turned blueIMG_1423.jpg IMG_1435.jpg IMG_1431.jpg .
