75 Torino wagon update

So my son bought this Torino wagon. It didn't really "run". It would sort of run but not idle or stay running. We had some time to dig into it last weekend. I felt like it had a vacuum leak but we couldn't find one. Checked timing and it was advanced about ~40 degrees BTC. Timing marks end at 30 but it was way passed that. Wouldn't run at all if we set it to 8 BTC as specified or anywhere close for that matter. I thought maybe it jumped time. First we checked with a piston stop to make sure the balancer was correct and checked to make sure the distributor wasn't 180 off. Everything checked out okay. We pulled front cover off and timing chain was ok. Very puzzled. So I suggested my son pull intake and we would clean it up and seal all potential vacuum leak sources. He took it off and took it to his school to sand blast it. I got home from Cleveland Ohio today and he brought the intake and other parts home after blasting them. Turns out they put a four barrel on the stock two barrel intake with an upside down adapter which I could see when we bought it. But after taking it apart I could see there was a port to a spacer (probably EGR) between the original 2 barrel and intake that was exposed to the intake side dumping the crossover exhaust into the motor! Result, it was dumping raw exhaust into the intake under the carb. It's a wonder it would run at all!

I see you have decided to become a man of few words!

A four barrel carb on that two barrel manifold is a sure way to burn through the fuel!

we are gonna put a 2 barrel back on for now, after we find one...
It's not going to be a hot rod. He will put a new timing set since we got it apart and then hunt down a 2 barrel and the correct spacer. Motor looks clean and it didn't knock or clatter. Cam looks good (what we can see). I think its going to be fine.

Are you looking for a particular 2 barrel? I think I have a few in the cupboard at home. I am away today, but can take a quick look. If I have something that will work I am happy to donate it to the cause!

not looking for anything in particular, that would be great. I have a FedEx account I can PM the number so it wouldn't cost any shipping for ya! Thanks in advance whether you have one or not I appreciate it

I hope so!

I don't remember when Dad finally sold that car, probably late 80's, but I know from 78 on...I beat the crap out of it. Hauled 1 self propelled Snapper, a 5hp Snapper ride on mower and enough gas and ext cords for the weed eater to allow me to mow all afternoon after school. Did that for 2 years. After that, I used the wagon to pull me and everyone else out of ditches, mud holes or when broken down. Plus, having a shag'n wag'n didn't hurt either! Damn thing caught fire one day while we were working on it and it still kept on running!
It wouldn't surprise me if it was found to be living in the woods of Florida like the flying car from Harry Potter.

that's great! this one was saved from becoming a demo derby car. It's been neglected but doesn't look like it was abused. Interior is in great shape. It's not been garaged but I don't think it would fit in most garages!!! It's huge!!!

My mustang had a 4 barrel on a 2 barrel intake when I bought it. Thing is I drove it that way for like 7 years never knowing it.

When I pulled the engine and removed the carb I was surprised. It always ran super rich and blew black smoke.

I'm guessing the PO of the Torino just didn't have the know-how or a good replacement and an adaptor was cheap. But clearly this set-up would never work unless they blocked off that port. The Autolite carb they put on is a vacuum secondary so it would probably never open the secondaries anyway. With a stock smog cam it probably won't rev much either. 2 barrel should be sufficient

Back in the day we would do that to get a four barrel with smaller primaries than the two barrel and increase MPG because the secondaries never opened.

It wasn't much but when gas hit .50 we had to get all we could out of every drop.

We also used mechanical secondary carbs and could feel in the pedal when the secondaries would open and keep our foot out as much as possible.

I remember those days. In fact there was a gas price war going on right after I got my license and it got down to 13.6 per gal.

I have yet to locate any 2bbls. Found a bunch of old 4bbls. I am going to continue to look, but I may have tossed the 2bbls on my last move.

To me, that Torino wagon deserves a nice 460 cid with a moderate cam and 4 barrels of carb! Maybe one should consider swapping engines from the Tarafied Mustang and putting in a nice 351W or C for easier maintenance.

Opentracker (John) dropped a 351C in his 65 Stang and has irritated many Cheby drivers,,,

Thanks for looking I really appreciate it but don't look any further. I found an Eddelbrock manifold at a swap meet today for $100.
