LED 'running' lights

Why do newer cars that have those LED running lights on the front when the turn signal is turned on, the LED running light for that side is turned off until the turn signal is cancelled or turned off?

My only suspicion is that the LED light is turned off while the turn signal is on for increased visibility. Looks dorky to me.

And yet thats the reason.
So there will be no discussion of the visibility of the turn signal.

I'm still trying to figure out why GM turns on the reverse lights whenever a door is unlocked or opened. It's like they want me to ignore the vehicle so it can back into me.

Doesn't make sense to me. The headlight does not go off when driving at night or when the headlights are on.
Uh, yeah. Having the headlight turn off on the side of the flashing turn signal would be a bit of a dangerous situation given that light is the first to light up the area into which the car would be making the turn!

Daytime driving lights have been proven to absolutely make cars more visible to other drivers so their existence is valid. Having that lamp extinguish when the flasher is on makes perfect sense as it would otherwise diminish the visibility of the turn signal. Not really sure there is any argument to be made against how all this illumination functions.

That drives me nuts too! Everyone I'm driving through a parking lot and someone unlocks their car I have to stop and see if they're backing out or not. It's really annoying.

I didn't know that !! Only GM cars or do other American made cars do that ?
Haven't seen this on european cars.

It's just a quick flash to give indication that your remote did, in fact, activate the lock mechanism. They are only flashed for a fraction of a second.

most of them stay on until the person gets in the car after unlocking. I spend a lot of time in mall parking lots.

I wouldn't announce that publicly....or Chris Hanson may be inviting you over!

I guess I stand corrected. I had never noticed that. I guess now I need to go hang out in a parking lot and see it in action myself. If that's really the case, I agree it is a bad system design.

my Fiesta does not have a remote. Am I a disadvantaged driver? (I have to unlock the car with a key), which is exactly how I like it.

yes you are. now I keep my key fob in my pocket. never removed.
all of this automation is causing the price of cars to soar. I have manual rolldown windows, manual door unlock. The addition of the 'wipe your ass' accessories is disgusting.
I would like to buy a truck with rubber floor mats to where I could pull them and hose out the cab.

I was born 10 years too late.

On this side of the big pond , all turn signal flashed 1 or 3 times when locking / unlocking with the remote.

Many of those ass-wiping features are really standard necessities today. I get what you are saying but power locks and windows in a daily driver is pretty basic.

I bought the very first Sport Trac to hit Chicagoland back in the day. That first few weeks I got some crazy looks and people would follow me to check it out when I parked. One of the best parts was you could literally hose out the interior. All "rubber" coated floor. Even the seat fabric was water repellent to a degree and dried in a flash. Loved that thing. Very utilitarian but still even it had power locks and windows. Bought another one for my son years later as a high school ride.

I completely disagree. Desired, but not required. All that stuff just increases costs with little to no benefit in my mind.

Maybe Yugo will come back. 8^P

Putting a motor and switch onto a already necessary lifting mech doesn't add much cost. At all. Manufacturers use those same components across virtually their entire line-ups. The stuff for locks same deal. Those components are very inexpensive. They don't sell it to Joe Public nearly as cheap but that's not why an average new car costs $35k. You want something to blame for the ever escalating vehicle costs look at government regulation. The cost to constantly improve mileage and better safety carries a big R&D price tag. Every car Ford or GM makes carries a piece of that bill. Some of those new safety gadgets do come at a hefty price but the public wants it so the builders put it in their cars and people pay the price.

I do not want it. I will stick with a 1965 Ford F100 and/or a Galaxie 500. No thank you mr Ford and GM. pound sand.
