Boom's 68 fastback

Made some progress on the front end. I mounted the front fenders, passenger side is OEM so it dropped right into place. The driver's side is pretty close, I just need to align the door a bit better.

I also got a few more parts from Cobranda. Started mounting the pieces to test fit and see what needs adjusting before sending the parts off to be powdercoated.

Just curious, how much $$ do you think you will have into this beast? Awesome work so far.

I didn't really have a budget in mind when I started this. More of a vision of what I wanted the end car to have/be. I take my time and try to do all the work myself where I can. The only real frustrating thing for me is having to buy the same part twice because I changed my mind or something wasn't planned right.

LMAO. "Budget"! Once you cross that line into custom/restomod if budget is in your vocabulary you are not going to have a good day. Ever. The only way to even try and reign in expenses is as Brett says try to do ALL the work yourself. And work FAST. Otherwise something new will come out or an idea form and plans get changed and more cash gets spent. Not that I would know anything about any of that. :D

it's best not to even add it up... If you are restoring/restomodding a car you just need to figure on spending all your disposable income for a few years (in my case going on 30).

I had a spreadsheet for Midlife; it's still up on the Web. Fortunately, that was back in the early 2000's when money was cheap and easy.

Starting to fit the nose to the car. Found out that to mark the proper position for my high beam lights I had to have the grille on, which needs the nose, which need the fenders, which need the door, which needs the quarters, which are finally aligned off of the taillight bezels. Come to think of it, are the holes for the taillights the only holes not slotted on these cars?

The nose is a 67 Shelby style from MTF, been sitting in a spare room for a couple years now.

Holy shnikes does having a repro fender on one side make this more fun. I'm pretty sure Dynacorn just throws darts at the lip of the repro fender and say "yep, thats where the hole needs to be".

Almost got the nose to mount all the way up to the fender.

Found out what was holding me up:

Some careful measurements and quality time with the dremel notched the lower lip there and now the nose is super close to fitting fairly flush (well, flush enough to start looking at what needs trimmed/added) Just have one lower fender hole left to get dremeled out (of course its on the repro), hell I may need to add metal to be able to pull the lower fender out far enough and still have something for the stud to mount to.

Got everything trimmed so the nose sits pretty much in place. I need to get some flange nuts and washers to start cinching it down. I also need to look at Rich's dvd to see how to pack the nose so it has a better lip. Pretty sure thats what I have to do, i'll check.

Anywho, here is how it sits currently.

Looks like I need to make another order with Cobranda for these trim rings for the grille. Just noticed they now have a sale going on....FML

Finally had a chance to go buy a machine shop and have my air cleaner base milled down. Then I had to find the right combination of studs to fit the darn thing. Of course the one that came with it wouldn't fit.

I have a post over on MTF's forum to see about hood clearance. I am really hoping to use their 68 style hood, we'll see what they say.

Looks Fantastic!! I was thinking one day I may change my front end/hood similar to yours.

What are you going to do with the rear end and what color??

Thanks! I'm planning on keeping the stock lights but adding the Shelby decklid and end caps. The car is going to be Grabber Blue.

Just curious how many hours to match up the nose to the car? Any trimming of the fenders or adding bondo to the fenders? Or was all your adjustments/sanding/trimming just in the nose?

Thats literally the nose as it comes from MTF minus the notch for the hood latch support. The repro fender required some elongating of the holes to slide the nose on.

I just did some work on the light bar and high beam brackets today. Going to reassemble the nose and test fit again then I'll send the brackets off to be powdercoated and once I get them back I'll try to start blending the nose in a bit better.

Pretty impressed that the nose matched up so well. What hood are you going with?

Haven't worked on the fastback much lately. I did decide to order the dash pad from MTF so I can start getting some other things lined up.
