Looking for some advice on paint

Thanks very much for the input guys. In the past couple of days I have been getting some quotes on getting the whole quarters done. Hopefully they will come back within my budget. If not, ill keep looking around.

I can't see how a full qtr replacement wouldn't be cheaper... Less body work, less welding... If i can help it i NEVER do patches, big or small...

With full qtr replacement , they will never know/see that the car has new sheetmetal.
IOW no seams or welding joints noticeble in the trunk which means , in case of selling the car , no discusion about previous repairs.
In the long run , you will be a winner.
My 0.02 eurocent

Hey everyone…its been a while since my last update…sorry for the delay, but life gets busy and my time for internet posting usually suffers most….

So since I last posted I was still look for a shop to do the metal work/paint. It took about 7 months before I found someone who I trusted to do the work and I could also afford....Had many people come look at the car and give me quotes…In the end I found who I feel is the right guy right down the street from my house. They have had the car since the summer and are working on it in stages…which is how I wanted it given the budget im working with. In the end we decided to do the full quarters.
They first media blasted the shell

the drivers front fender that was on my car was in really shape...when my dad bought the car in 74 it was smashed up, so he found one off a 68 in the junk yard that was “less dented” . It was still piled with bondo though and I decided to replace it with a new fender

there were some rust holes on the top of the inner fender, they repaired them...(old fender is still on in this pic)

Metal work is coming along...not done, but good ways done I would say. Meantime at my house I have been cleaning up the 390. Tore it down a little bit just to replace some gaskets that had not been touched since 2001.

So that’s what I have for the moment…ill try to keep some more pics and news coming…

Welcome back! Looks like things are progressing along nicely. Keep the updates coming, we really enjoy seeing the projects come together.

I should update this with the whats going on lately

I finished putting the motor back together

Rearend got powder coated this week...actually in the correct semi gloss, but this is right after they took it out of the oven so its still pretty glossy yet

like 97% of the metal work on the car is done, it was sealed with dupont DTM

Then it was primered

Next they will do the final body work on it and then the same shade of blue that is was. Then the rolling chassis will come back to my garage where ill replace all of the suspension, brakes, reinstall the drivetrain, interior, etc.

Its moving along, slowly, but life is crazy busy with kids, house, work, and mountain bike racing...so the mustang is always the spare time project.

From now on it is downhill .
Enjoy your restoration , don't make shortcuts.
You did a great job !!;)

Long...LONG overdue update.....

So due to alot of factors over the past couple of years, the car has been moving along very slowly. Partially my fault as I did not have the funds to just give the body shop 100% upfront and also part because I wanted to fix all of the things that needed fixing...this added more time and money, but happy to report...the is once again blue!!

Took a little while but I finally found a color that matched the blue my dad had painted this car with in the 70s. It was a standard Axalta cromax color, spectramaster blue if I remember correctly.

So I have had the car home a week now....Got right to work.

When I took it to the shop, I left all of the suspension on it. The front was original and a total mess, I had planned to rip it all out and replace it. So I figured I would leave the old stuff in there so they could move the car around...then I would replace all of it once the car was painted and back home. So I got to work this week.

Pretty sure this has never been touched, after cleaning everything I found alot of paint marks which lead me to think that its all original sans rotors/calipers

I pulled the rear out...which I took apart a while ago....they had blasted/powder coated it for me...I just put the axles in so we could put the wheels on it

JdsPs9n.jpg

I have a newly rebuilt center section...3.50 posi....im also going to convert the rear to disc

Ap9I7Xg.jpg

Took the hood and fenders off, wrapped them up in moving blankets, put them up in the attic out of harms way...Then wrapped up the car and got to work stripping the area behind the suspension. Going to clean everything up and paint before installing all of my new stuff

idBd7oB.jpg

some parts im going to take to the sandblaster...some just cleaned, some powder coated, steering box needs to be rebuilt, axles need new bearings pressed on

so with the car up on the lift and all of the suspension out, figure it would be a good time to run my new brake lines, etc.
