Bent axle!

So I've been picking up a vibration this year when I drive to Stang on the highway.

I was hoping it was a tire out of balance, turns out not. My driver's side axle is bent.

So, I have the original 8" rear end with 2.79 gears. Would this be 28 spline axle?

Any suggestions on replacing the axle? Tips, vendors?

Moser, Currie or Quick Performance would be my choices. Do yourself a favor and replace both sides with new bearings and wheel studs.

You can get axles all kinds of places. Call a local wrecking yard. If you want to buy new call Quick Performance over in Ames by {.}. They can set up you for a good price. Yes, it is 28 spline. I don't know why you'd have to change out both sides but I would pull both and verify its condition and put in new seals.

I think the 8 & 9 are the same axles. If you called Max at QP, he’d get you set up.

Thanks.

I'm on their site now. Dangerous shopping happening. While I'm at it syndrome is kicking in. I did want to regear the rearend.......

I'll give him a call on Monday.

Finally got the new axle.

While I'm at it I think I'm going to pull the the rear end out and clean it up, so I might as well replace the third member with better gears.

I'm thinking 3.55 gears? I mostly drive on the highway so I don't want to be revving too high.

Should I spend the extra cash on lockers?
I'm just torn on whether it's worth the $300.

Suggestions.

The 3.50 gears should be good. Seriously though, if you're not going around corners fast or doing burnouts, spend the locker money elsewhere.

definitely more of low and slow cruiser most of the time, but I drive it to work a lot. I won't be tearing up any tracks.

Just to make sure anyone reading this is clear, a "locker" is not a stock limited slip differential like Ford's Trac Loc or GM Posi. A locker, like the famous Detroit Locker, does just what the name implies and "locks" both axles together so both wheels drive. They are made for straight line racing. Good ones can permit some regular driving but they are not really meant for the street. You'll still get some noise and likely premature tire wear too.

When a car turns the outside wheel needs to rotate a lot faster than the inside wheel. limited slip diffs are built to allow for this as they do not "lock" the axles mechanically but by use of clutches that permit different rpm on either shaft. That's my short and very simple explanation. You can easily get better detail on the Web.

A great limited slip that doesn't wear like the stock clutch style is the TruTrac. Mark races with his and I love mine driving on the street. Can't say anything bad about it.

I just use the term locker casually. I was looking at this except 3.55. DNE bought hers from this guy.

I should add that I have a coupon from eBay today that would get me $100off.

So with posi it's $844 shipped. Without posi is $574 shipped.

Only a difference of $270.

Decisions.

How does one get such a coupon! I never get squat. You guys talk about Summit deals too and I blank on those as well. Spend thousands at a time and they don't even toss in a t-shirt!

If you download the eBay app they have a 15% off coupon on there right now it's good I'm pretty much everything. then I get notifications from the app whenever there's a deal they do the 15% off thing quite a bit lately
