65 Fastback build in Chi-Town

New Member
Hello all, I'm new to this site and wanted to share my build.
I've been building a 65 FB street car that will be used for some auto-X and track time. I acquired the car after 6-7 years of searching several states, for something with a solid foundation and located this in my own backyard (as they say).
At this point I've already done new front torque boxes, custom subframe connectors w/cross bracing, trans tunnel for the T-56, mini tubs and 6 pt roll bar.
I have chosen to go with a 331 stroker, T-56 magnum and 9" rear with 3link/watts setup.

First photo group is the car before the tear down.

At least there's ONE smart person from that area :whis

Bodies ? What bodies? We don't live in them thar' parts, but for them parts, they see about 10-12 per week on average. Some weekends, higher.

As for staying here, it won't be long. Just waiting on the youngest to finish HS. Then we're outta here.

Now back to the build.
Next on the list is the torque boxes. Since the 65-66 coupes and fastback didn't come with them, they were for 67-68, 2 piece from CJ Pony. Good product.

I will be tuning in to watch this build. Welcome to the forum.

+1.

Nice to have another Midwest person, even if you are from Illinois. J/k

Thank you peoples. :bow

Next came the DSE mini tubs. This was probably the most nervous thing I did on the car so far, because I had to notch the original frame, once its cut there's no going back, but DSE provides a nice set of frame rails for this. To get an extra inch of tire (up to 315 tire) you would need to cut the provided rails too thin for my liking, so stuck with the regular install. With this setup we used, the largest tire I feel comfortable with is a 295. You could probably get by with a 305, if you don't take any curves.

Here's a 285 tire on 17" rim we had on hand to test fit.
Also there are a couple of pics that show how we had to trim the interior panel for the tubs. Decision was made at this point, not to install the rear seat.

It's too bad the stock panels couldn't work. I had started to tub mine (custom, no kit) and sized it to just fit within the panels. Wanted to keep the stock look inside. I since put that on the back burner as I want to get it back on the road! The tubs and four link can come later in my case.

Yeah it was a bummer they didn't fit, but I am extremely satisfied with the tubs and the direction its going.

The next thing we worked on was the trans mount, sub frame connectors and cross bracing.
