68 Coupe Daily Driver - Keeping it running and trying to impove it

Re: 68 Coupe Daily Driver - Getting Ready for the HRPT - Todo List

Got the new Northern Radiator in, had to cut the shroud at the bottom to make it fit.

Replaced all the spark plugs and wires and installed a new started and solenoid. The passenger door hinges are bad so I am going to do a rebuild on them next. Hopefully nothing else will break.

How will you remove the door hinges? Will the fender still be installed? How do you plan to align the door?

I just did mine on the car a few weeks ago... Not too hard with the hinges on the car, but you'll probably want to remove the door itself from the hinge.

Mustangsteve sells a complete greasable kit, but I was short on time and did mine a little differently. The process should pretty much simpler if your just sticking with stock pins and bushings.

Re: 68 Coupe Daily Driver - Getting Ready for the HRPT - Todo List

A mechanic friend offed to do the hinges for just a hour of shop labor and I said SURE. Dropped it off this morning and picked it up at lunch.

Did an oil change last night since I figured I got water in it when I replaced the timing cover gasket.

Next week I am going to swap the 3.55 lockers for the 2.79 open gears. I will going over 3 MPG with this swap. That will help with this 3000+ mile trip.

Sounds good John, time is getting short. 25 days, 23 for me, it's a long drive to Texas.

Re: 68 Coupe Daily Driver - Getting Ready for the HRPT - Todo List

The Stang is up on jack stands so I can replace the rear gears from 3.55 lockers to 2.79 open.

Also started cleaning the engine bay. Nee to touch up the polish on the valve covers.

John be careful under there, don't drop anything on yourself or pull anything (except that pig). The PT is too close for you to be hurting yourself. Only 15/16 days.

Re: 68 Coupe Daily Driver - Getting Ready for the HRPT - Todo List

Steven, my 26 year old son, will be helping me. He is more limber and stronger than I am.

Steven??? Come on John, just because you haven't seen me in a year. Must have a lot on your mind.

I just reread that. Your son Steven is going to help you. I must have been in the sun too long today.

Fred, you're hilarious!

Steven welded up the crack around the fill plug on the housing (the old weld leaked).

Swapped the speedometer cable gears from 23 to 18 to get the odometer reading correct. Over 10 miles, it is just off .1 miles.

Cleaning and polishing the engine is next.

I have never like the fitment of the A pillar pods. So I am removing them to install the Driver side piece from Mustangs to Fear.

Was under the car cleaning and noticed the dust boots were toast. I think it is time to d the roller UCA project.

Took a set of old upper control arms I had and stripped them.

Next will be to sandblast them clean.

I've been reading about how bad the fit is on the gauge pods. I might look in to making them. I'm planning on installing the in the center of our dash.

Let me know when you get one.

I put your dash in my Diamond Blue Coupe and have been thinking about getting another one for this coupe. A gauge pod like the early Shelby's had would be interesting.

Finally got back to working on the Mustang after a little burnout.

Got the UCA ready to weld in OpenTracker's roller pieces. My son, Steven ran out of time after he started one. I took the other one over to Distinctive Motorsports. They welded the pieces in. They were really impressed with OpenTracker's double roller design.

I have some grinding to do on the other one before I the side braces welded in.
