Anyone been to Ireland?

I am thinking about going there next April--(the wife has always wanted to go there--not me) I will probably smoke my computer looking up info on Ireland, also spend way too much $ going there---I would rather go on a peacock bass fishing trip on the Amazon river for my once in a lifetime trip. I see our money is worth .68 on their $1.--not good. I want to talk to people who have gone there before I go.

I've been to Ireland, and I had a great time.

If you like drinking good beer in small neighborhood pubs full of friendly people, you might enjoy yourself.

Oh, the scenary is beautiful and the historical stuff is pretty cool, too. :nice

I really liked Dublin as well as the southwest area (the ring of kerry)

Got your PM and El presidente, StangFix Ireland is working on a response.

Will be back to you later today.

My wife and I went there in 2005. It was amazing! I would love to go back someday.

I have some pics in my photobucket if you want to look at them.

So I decided to post this on the forum just in case anyone else is interested in visiting Ireland (and/or helping me on my stang :nice)

Rod,
Ireland is a great place to visit and if you prefer scenery then the west of Ireland is the only place for you. I live on the east coast and it has a few nice spots but the west will take your breath away.

You have a few options in terms of airports. You can fly into Belfast (North, east), Dublin (East) or Shannon (South west). If you are more into scenery then I would recommend flying straight into Shannon and then planning your trip from there. You will need to rent a car if you want to see all the sights. A lot of people fly into Dublin then spend a day or two there then head south towards Kerry (about 4-5 hours driving). There is a lot to see and do in Dublin but I personally feel it is a little overrated and it certainly is a lot more expensive than anywhere else. I would recommend Kerry and Clare then working north towards Galway and Silgo and if you have the time you could even head towards Donegal which is beautiful. Ireland is a small place compared to the states. You can drive the whole country east to west in about 4 hours and north to south in about 7 hours...but don't forget most of the country is not covered by motorways so it can be slow driving, especially out west.

Here is a selection of places that might be of interest to you…

Powerscourt house – This amazing old country house not far outside Dublin. http://www.powerscourt.ie/gardens/
Killarney is a city down in the south east. A nice place to stop for a night or two.
Dingle – This is a wonderful small village down on the very western tip of the country. A place that I am very fond of, where you can see the real Ireland. If you do visit Dingle be sure to stay at Ballintaggart House http://www.ballintaggarthouse.com/ A very good friend of mine runs this small guest house. Ask for John and tell him Johnny sent you. He will look after you.
The Ring of Kerry. An amazing drive trough Kerry. http://www.ringofkerrytourism.com/
The Burren. Beautiful area of Clare. http://www.burrennationalpark.ie/
The Cliffs of Moher – Spectacular cliffs near Ennis in County Clare. http://www.cliffsofmoher.ie/
Galway – Nice city in the west of Ireland.
The Giants Causeway. http://www.giantscausewaycentre.com/
Newgrange http://www.newgrange.com/

Let me know what takes your fancy and I will be able to guide you more. what are you thinking accommodation wise? Will you rent a car? How long you planing on staying?

And remember if there is anything I can do for you on this end please let me know. I am always happy to help a fellow SFer.

Rod, here is my take on Ireland since my wife and I just went this past June. Great Place!! I would definately recommend it to anyone looking for a getaway. There is tons to see and do, but also a great place to relax, have a few pints at the pub, and meet some great folks. We started in Belfast, worked our way south to Dublin, around the coast to the southeast by car, and flew out of Shannon. I agree with Johnny that Dublin seemed to be a little overrated and doesn't warrant more than a day or two. There was so much other stuff to see that we wasted about a day and a half too much time there. Needless to say Johnny won't steer you wrong on his suggestions. I will definately visit the Emerald Isle again someday.

I wanna come to Ireland just to see your little squirrel drinking buddy!

My wife and I visited about a year ago. We flew into Dublin, spent a day there and then traveled across the country to Kerry and then back to Dublin, but taking a little further South route. My wife has family in Moyvane in Co. Kerry, so it was cool to meet them and spend a day there. We did the ring of Kerry, that was really neat, lots of gorgeous scenery. Newgrange is definitely worth seeing and learning about. We didn't really think Dublin was overrated, we felt like we didn't have enough time to see everything, although my wife spent half a day at the ancestry office doing research on her family tree. Her maiden name is Mulvihill, her Grandfather was Irish, the family that lives there is from her Grandfather's side (her great Uncle.)

Newgrange is only about 25 minutes from me and yes it is amazing. http://www.newgrange.com/

Don't get me wrong about Dublin, its nice and there's lots to see and do but when I met Brian there in the tourist area they were charging €6.80 ($10) for a bottle of beer which shocked me because the same beers costs about 40% elsewhere. I actually prefer Belfast, great buzz around that city and the Giants Causeway is not too far away.
