Cast Aluminum Valve Covers - How To Maintain?

My Cobra cast aluminum valve covers are about a year old. They are flaking a white powder substance and are starting to look somewhat grungy. I didn't think to have them powdercoated when I got them (if that was an option?) The polished parts now has some small pits. I was thinking about painting the cast part with Eastwood cast aluminum paint and re-doing that ever so often. Thoughts/suggestions?

The white flaky stuff is oxidation - aluminum oxide. IMO, the best bet is to have them clear powder coated. I love the finish of textured cast aluminum, so I'd hate to see it painted over. Unless you wanted to paint it black crinkle, which I think looks great on those style vc's. Black crinkle with the brushed fins.
