The Isle of Man TT has that same 'up close' feeling today.

I just bought a documentary DVD called "1" about formula 1 racing during the 60s-90s. Quite interesting. Basically about how thesafety was improved over the years because of drivers (lead by Jacky Stewart) who didn't want to die on unsafe tracks and cars.
 
and that thing between Senna and Prost.
Prost got some "protection" from the big boss of FIA.
Can't remember the name who was the big boss in that area.

But yes , Jacky Stewart was the driving force to get more safety on the race track.
Alot of good men let their lives at the race tracks in those days.
