Digital Odometers

Does anyone know if the digital odometers on later model cars can be tampered with by shifty used car dealers? The old mechanical ones could be rolled back or you could only guess at the actual mileage after the car rolled into a sixth digit. The digital units are six digits. I'm looking at old (92-96) Broncos and I've found a couple with low mileage on their digital displays. Can they be trusted?

I think on some that it's possible to switch a chip on the back that changes mileage.

Look for ones that has a official dealer maintenance history.
Or take the vin and ask an official dealership to search for the cars history.
