SOUTHPORT – A man called authorities Saturday, Aug. 8, when he discovered that his in-laws had stolen dirt from a pile he had bought and hauled to his property off Skunk Valley Road. He told a deputy that he had noticed some of the dirt missing, had seen his brother-in-law next door on a backhoe, and saw dirt had been spread in their driveway.

“I looked at the pile of dirt, and it appeared that it had been recently moved, the deputy wrote in the report. “Tractor tracks in the area matched those that were subsequently observed in the inlaws’ yard next door.

The deputy went next door and spoke to the complainant’s father-in-law, who immediately stated that he had taken the dirt to fill in the driveway where his son-in-law had made some ruts. He added that he was going to get the remainder of the dirt later. He “appeared very upset, the deputy reported.

The deputy told the man and his son they should not return to the complainant’s property. The complainant completed a sworn written statement and signed complaints charging his father-in-law with petit theft.
