My Wife's Diamond Blue Coupe (A Daliy Driver)

janschutz

Corn Hauler
I am building a 68 coupe for my wife. It used to be my driver. I broke a strut rod and I have had a bad case of while I am at it. I really need to get off my rear and get this finished.

Re: My Wife's Diamond Blue Coupe

wow, very nice work.
one question, I see you installed the roof console first with the old headliner. I have a roof console and bracket but already have installed a new headliner. Should I buy another headliner or can I get the bracket in there with out ruining the the installed headliner?

Re: My Wife's Diamond Blue Coupe

One of your pictures description is incomplete... "Speaking of cans, there was a tin can lid on the firewall that was used to".... What? Knowing what some PO's are capable of, makes you only wonder!

The old headliner was very brittle and ripped when I tried to cut a slit just big enough for the bracket. Yours might be more pliable so it is worth a try. If you able to get it in without ripping, then great, else you need to get a new one anyway.

Re: My Wife's Diamond Blue Coupe

Since my driver is at the paint shop, I have no excuse to not work on Julie's Mustang. It is time to refinish the doors.

These picture are from a few years ago when I bought the wrong interior paint. I just got in some new paint and test painted some junk to make sure the color was correct.

surface rust lurked under the 5 layers of paint.

Used Eastwood's Rust Encapsulator. I was out of the silver so I had to use the red oxide.

My first impression is it looked great but too dark.

You can relly see how much Darker the Rainbow brand is.

Hope fully tonight I will get the lighter blue on the door.

what did you use to strip the 5 layers of old paint?, it looked like you did a good job.

Aircraft paint stripper I got at the auto store. Used a brass brush to get in the groves.

Re: My Wife's Diamond Blue Coupe

cool, thanks. I need to strip and repaint mine. Color okay but paint is too thick.

Re: My Wife's Diamond Blue Coupe

Sometimes you need to do something easy to make progress just to feel good about it. I cleaned and repainted the valve covers. I also coated the inside of the valve covers with Glyptal.

A before and after shot.

John, I see you stripped the doors down to metal. For those that care, years ago I stripped a 66 coupe dors and the entire interior of a 68 bug on the same day without chemicals.

I used an electric drill and a round wire brush. It takes the paint off and the areas that have the rough detail it gets all the paint out of the grooves. I makes a mess but easy to clean up.

On the Mustang, roll the windows down and tape with multiple layers over the top of the windows, mask off the wind wings with multiple layers of tape and be very careful in those areas.

Your car is coming along nicely!
