Need a Mild 351w Recipe

Hey guys, we're getting ready to think about the motor for my wife's 68 fastback. We are starting with a F4TE 351W. The motor will be backed by a T-5. We will be running a carb. We haven't gotten to the rear-end yet but we will be running a 9", open to suggestions on gearing.

The goals for the motor are: Street Manners! This car will be driven on the street 100%, mostly interstate driving, but will also be tooled around town. 325-375HP, I don't need a 500HP super-engine, just something we can drive and enjoy. I would like to utilize the stock heads or GT40 heads if possible. I'd love to hear your opinions.

I think it's already a roller cam block, should be able to tell with the intake off. For the street you want low end power/torque so stock heads or GT40's should be okay. The roller 351 truck cam duration is 256/266 (int/exh) advertised, I don't know the spec @ .050". Lift with 1.7 rockers is .449 intake and .476 exhaust. With 1.6's it's .422/.448. It's pretty mild but should be a pretty good street cam. (Got those specs from a truck forum). It just won't make much power or breath above about 5K rpm's.

The F4TE block is "roller ready" - but not all came with roller cams. If it didn't all you need to go roller is the lifters, cam, compatible distributor gear, dog bones, spider, and to tap two holes in the block valley for the spider. The block already has the lengthened lifter bores so it does not require conversion lifters.

With the mild goals stated I don't think you need aftermarket heads, shoot for about 9:1 compression, and the roller cam used in the 5.0HO would be a good candidate for performance and manners. Don't choke it with stock exhaust manifolds... shorties and dual exhaust with an h or x pipe.

Good luck,
-Rory
