What's a billion?
This is too true to be funny.

The next time you hear a politician use the
Word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about
whether you want the 'politicians' spending
YOUR tax money.

A billion is a difficult number to comprehend,
But one advertising agency did a good job of
Putting that figure into some perspective in
One of its releases.

A.
A billion seconds ago it was 1959.

B.
A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.

C.
A billion hours ago our ancestors were
living in the Stone Age.

D.
A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.

E.
A billion dollars ago was only
8 hours and 20 minutes,
at the rate our government
is spending it.

While this thought is still fresh in our brain...
let's take a look at New Orleans ...
It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division.

Louisiana Senator,
Mary Landrieu (D)
was asking Congress for
250 BILLION DOLLARS
To rebuild New Orleans . Interesting number...
What does it mean?

A.
Well .. If you are one of the 484,674 residents of New Orleans
(every man, woman and child)
You each get $516,528

B.
Or... If you have one of the 188,251 homes in
New Orleans , your home gets $1,329,787.

C.
Or... If you are a family of four...
Your family gets $2,066,012.

Washington , D.C

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago...
And our nation was the most prosperous in the world.

We had absolutely no national debt...
We had the largest middle class in the world...
And Mom stayed home to raise the kids.

What happened?
Can you spell

'politicians'!

And I still have to

For English.

What the hell has happened to our country?????

It's called progress!o_O An item that cost $20 a hundred years ago now costs $477.http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/
http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/

Also, the population has increases from 90 million to 320 million and counting!

Not a fair comparison, IMHO.

And everyone knows that the Katrina money went to the friends and family and campaign contributors of La. politicians, and NOT to families.

The conservative email chains must run in a loop because this one first appeared about ten years ago.

Using Gary's calculator link, my 1984 Mustang that I bought new for $10K should cost $23K now. Try to find a new 2014 GT for less than $35-40K. Hell, I'd go buy one tomorrow if a new GT was that price now.

Inflation Calculator
If in 1984
I purchased an item for $10,000
then in 2014
that same item would cost: $22,728
Cumulative rate of inflation: 127.3%

It may be unfathomable to you, but not to the politicians who approve the budget.

It may be "easy", too bad once again your beloved Snopes is inaccurate.

While the dollar figures are slightly off, they're not grossly off. Snopes leaves the impression that the difference in figures (their math versus the example), shows it's not accurate. The dollar figures presented show a difference of several thousand dollars, easily written off to the basis used to calculate them (i.e. source of population numbers ).

Where the prime inaccuracy exists is their "explanation" of the Katrina math. They stated the bill was NOT for New Orleans but for Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. Wrong! Snopes further states it was to "provide some perspective on how much $250 billion is by presenting it relative to the number of people in the area hardest hit by the hurricane". Again, WRONG! The bill spells out specific funding for Louisiana in general and New Orleans in particular. Since they singled out Louisiana AND then added the Gulf Coast, that implies Mississippi and other states. The bill contains no such inclusion for other states. Their statement of "people in the area hardest hit..." is also based on the media hype which has the general US public believing Katrina hit New Orleans and ravaged it while doing little damage elsewhere. The bulk of aid (financial and physical), was sent to the New Orleans area. Ask the people of Mississippi how they feel about that!

If you'd like to actually READ the bill, instead of Snopes' bullshit, here ya go: https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/109/s1765/text. Sorry Randy, IMHO once again Snopes has failed you!

When I said it was easy, it was only that I was able to find it on Snopes relatively quickly. Even Snopes basically agreed with the math.

That's easy: just don't believe anything FordDude has to say in this forum. *G*

Unless, of course, he agrees with me.

Heck FD even said the Steelers were going to win the SuperBowl.....can anyone believe a word he says after that?????:rolleyes::D
