Pinion seal

Well, that was fun! regarding the removal of my pinion seal out of my 8" rear end! I went to O'reilly's and they didn't have anything close to my seal! I took the little tag, the seal, but couldn't make out any numbers on the old seal. any clues where to purchase a pinion seal? :bow
 
napaguy, no, I have't gone yet. It would be tomorrow before I can find the nearest NAPA store. That would be really awesome of you to do that! :pep I probably won't go looking until late morning. Thanks!!

Hehe. Napa has what we call 'line codes' for parts. It helps organize parts by part type, in addition to manufacturer part # (because it's very difficult to re-number everything that comes into the store). NOS = Napa Oil Seal, FIL = Filter, TFW = Tru-Flow (water) Pump, etc.
 
Napa, saved the day!

Just wanted to Thank you for directing me to the Napa store. they had it, I just haven't installed it yet. I just need to clean the spines so it will go on a little easier than it came off! Thank goodness I had a puller in my tool box that worked well! Kind of a lazy day, don't feel like doing anything. I did install both my driver and passenger windows yesterday, kind of wore me out I guess.

What is your "plan of attack" for re-installing the pinion yoke? After setting up the gears backlash, the pinion nut is tightened to "X" amount. As this tightening process occurs, a "crush sleeve" is crushed... that can't be "crushed" again. Exactly what "X" amount is, is determined during the assembly of the rearend and meshing of the gears. Simply tightening the pinion nut "tight" again until it won't turn anymore could alter the depth of the pinion shaft and ultimately the contact pattern on the ring gear.

It's a tricky affair, but since you've already removed the pinion nut and seal.... you've got a 50/50 chance of having everything work out when you re-install the nut. It'll either alter the gears contact pattern or it won't. It'll either whine/howl... or it won't.

I tried putting one back together by just tightening until the nut stopped.... but i was swapping yokes.
Didn't work out too well for me, had to take it the a specialist at a later date....
 
Yes, I know about the crush sleeve thing. All I can do it put it back together and see what happens. I am going to clean the threads on my yoke and the pinion shaft with brass brush Dremel, so maybe it'll go on better than it came off. I haven't gotten out there to do this. If it howls, grinds, etc,. what's another 1000.bucks at this point!! :pbj
