Romoving a window crank in a 65

So I read that the 65 window cranks are held on with a retaining clip in stead of screws. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get the clip removed though. I have tried the old rag trick with no luck. I tried a flathead screw driver also but I just can't see where the clip should be. Anyone have any pointers on getting this crank removed? Thanks a lot.

Make a hook out of some wire, push on the door panel to see clip, hook it and remove or buy the tool. Do not tear the panel.

Mine had a screw. Basically just a threaded bolt with a machined groove for your flat head screw driver. I'll find a pic for you.

I think it's towards the first few pages of Fred's build thread.

In this pic you can see the hole the screw goes into.

Not the best of photographs but it gives you a good idea about where the darn screw is hidding. I had to use one of those eye glass repair flat head screwdrivers.

Hit me up if there is anything else I can help with.

Early 65's were held on with the clip, late 65's had the allen head like 66. Here is the tool, maybe you can make one. Abe, I think your pic is of the rear seat crank.

Sorry guys, I just couldn't let it go.

I don't have Internet, Cable or a Home Phone yet so bare with me. I went through Fred's Build photo album on my laptop hard drive (please don't ask how many files I had to go through, LoL). So I took a picture of a picture. I'll post up the real deal tomorrow.

Looks like the screw for the front window crank is right on the face(at least it's that way on Fred).

My 65 requires the tool. I got it cheap when I bought a stereo from Crutchfield and some speakers and the tool was required for the removal of the door panels on my 2000 Durango.

You can likely buy it at a local auto parts house.

So I bought the (not so) fancy tool today and slipped it in there between the crank and the panel and guess what? No dice. It appears as though there is no clip holding the handle in place. I spent a good hour on it and got no where. I also checked every conceivable location for a set screw: nothing. I have crappy cell phone pics but they don't show anything. I got desperate enough to break out a crow bar and try prying thinking maybe the handle is just rusted/crudded on there. No budge. I'm fighting every urge to destroy the door panel. I'm also at a loss. It seemed like it should be a relatively easy fix to get in there and fix the door latch and window regulator. Instead, I'm going no where fast. ugh

Ruin the handle or the door panel......if it does not come off, those are your choices.

Are you 100% sure there is no clip. It fits close to the wider part of the handle and can be a real bear to see. Can you see the grove it should sit in? Have you seen a handle off the car to know for sure what you are trying to get to?

Just found this...not a Mustang but the same setup.

I'm 90% sure there is no clip. Its really tough to see inbetween the panel and the handle though obviously. What I can see is there is a plastic washer/ spacer there and sometimes I think I see the groove, other times I'm not so sure. Only other mustang crank I ever took off was on my 68 and that was just a screw. The crank on my 91 escort had a clip and it came off easy with a rag. I'm going to give it a go again tomorrow. Then something gets broken.

I don't think the grove goes completely around the crank mount. If there is no clip, the crank could have been wedged onto the splines. I have seen them about a half spline off from wear and slippage. Might try forcing the crank to turn a bit at the full up or down position.
