Time to get serious about cooling the 65 mustang down

Nick I mentioned this on another forum, but I'm running the Northern 19x28 Race radiator with the integated trans cooler. Granted, this is on my 70 but I'm pretty sure your frame rail widths are the same. I did have to relocate the battery, so if that is out of the question then I wouldn't go with the 28" and instead go with the next narrow one at 26" wide. Here is a link to their list:
http://www.northernfactory.com/HIGH_PER ... R_RACE_PRO

or if you want double pass: http://www.northernfactory.com/HIGH_PER ... _RADIATORS

Not package deals, but the Summit Racing radiators are rebranded Northern Radiators. I'm pretty sure the Summit fans will suck balls. 1585cfm isn't squat. Here is a list of the Northern fan shrouds that you can cut to fit your Spal to:
http://www.northernfactory.com/HIGH_PER ... OUDS

From what it sounds, you don't have cooling issues at idle but rather at speed. Is this correct? If that is the case, your Spal is doing its job the the radiator is not.

Here is a link to my radiator fan shroud thread, basically the Northern 209609 radiator with the Z40013 shroud (17 7/16 x 21 11/16 ELECTRIC FAN SHROUD KIT, which they apparently don't make any more and that part number is instead a dual fan shroud kit)

I'm in the same boat Nick. My car needs a new radiator and I'm shopping. The one I found at Summit that'll fit is this one but at $523 , I'm gonna keep looking.

The rad that was in the car was:

Core - 18 1/2" ( 20" mounting flange to mounting flange ) tall X 21 3/4" wide and was a 4 row copper/brass @ 3" thick
Tank to tank OD was 27 3/4" with 1 1/2" inlet and outlet .
Top passenger side inlet , lower drivers side outlet

Best I can remember it's from a 71-73. I was looking on ebay too and found this one that looks like it'll work.
I had looked at a 71-73, but was never able to nail down any dimensions that I could use. The standard measurements I found were always the core size itself, but didn't include the extra width/height for the tanks!

I know this thread has aged a little but figured I'd add a little update. The radiator John mentioned is indeed a 71/73 Mustang radiator, with a proviso, it is the 6 cyl version (and very limited small block applications). That explains why I could never find one with the dimensions I needed. Most suppliers list the bigger version which was used for V8's. It is too big for a 65/66. The smaller 6cyl has a core width of 21 3/4", as John described. The "common" V8 version has a 26" wide core. A three row "heavy" cooling version is also available in the smaller radiator..it's a little pricey at $429 from NPD! It's also listed as US manufactured.

The reason I bring this up now is because I finally tracked a new one down and it arrived today. I got it from Perogie for $249 and is an older (though NOS in the box), Modine. Fortunately with it's apparent age, it's not one of the newer overseas Modine units. Can't wait until this weekend to fit it in the car!!

This is the one I got. Only $222 with a shroud kit and free shipping. The cars not on the road yet but I'm happy with it so far.

Just to throw this "out there"...

For a GOOD, cheap electric fan, a lot of hotrod guys (including several big blocks I know of) are going to the Chevy HHR fan. Lots of airflow, low amp draw. We just changed my son-inlaw's Foxbody over from the Mark VII fan to the HHR - cools better, and the amp gauge barely flinches. (Mark VII dimmed the lights severely, even with a 3G!).

Best of all - DIRT CHEAP ($50-$60) on Amazon or Rock Auto.... :yah

That's a handy piece of information right there - I was just about to get one of those Mark VII fans - Thanks !

Wow! Talking about breathing new life into an older thread! LOL

Rad looks good John, and a good price. I was a little more limited (self imposed), on my choices. I wanted a "stock" radiator to maintain a fully "stock" appearance under the hood. I know it made things more difficult as opposed to using one of the aluminum offerings out there. There's been a lot of choices I've made on my project though that have made things more difficult. Hey, why change now?!! LOL

So it took a little while with sad events obviously having their impacts on the process....but it is finally here and Wow....this thing looks awesome. It will be a little work to get it in there....but something tells me the car won't have a 'runs too hot' issue anymore.

Its even got a relocated fill neck so it will slide under the upper radiator support lip without the need to notch it :) Someone much smarter than I added that into the specs....thanks to John for providing them and to Rod for drafting them and then procuring this nice custom setup for me.

Nice looking set up Nick - I think your right, your C won't be a hot head anymore !

Forgot to add - Your a good man Nick. Nothing better than car parts in the household. `

Hey John I've got a question (or two, but one specifically for you)

With this cooler in this size.....71-73 mustang 351c upper and lower radiator hose?

And second....I'm a little sad to see at the price point it didn't come with relays and stuff for the fans, and since I only have 1 in the car now I will need to get more wire harnesses to run these twin fans.....anyone have any good sources?

I'm at that point too. I didn't keep or lost the part numbers from the last time I put hoses on the car. These are what I'm going with for now. I did need to do some trimming on them so they will fit the car since the motor sits a little different in the 65 than the 71.

Found this set at MU

I get most of my electric stuff from Radio Shack or a local electrician called Potters Electronics. I would think Summit Racing, Jeggs or Painless would have some relays and wiring.

Some of you may know I have had a 410 cleveland stuffed in my stock 65 engine compartment since 2001.

I have been running a fancy Griffen HD cooling setup that fit in the stock location since about 2003 with a spal 16 puller fan and have had mediocre results.

Well today I pulled the trigger and did something that makes it a little harder to simply unbolt some stuff and turn it back to stock ;)

I took out the griffen setup

I made a template....

I made sure to measure once and cut twice....

And whalla...65 radiator indent bubble gone....and

25 inch monster installed

Things left to do after today

1. Fab up second upper mount. I did the lower mount and it turned out great and the left upper is 'ok'.
2. Re-wire 2 wires that I had to cut out from the lower end of the radiator support.
3. Fab up new transmission lines. The radiator has a cooler, but it doesn't like the flared lines I have....it must need AN fittings or something so I have to call the manufacture and find out....or maybe Rod can tell me ;)
4. Finish modifying the battery tray and reinstall
5. Find an 8.5 inch wide battery (probably the unobtainiam task)

Overall...I am really happy with the install. Slides right between the frames with paper thickness to spare on each side and I was able to use 71 hoses with just a little tweaking from a razor blade.

That looks really nice Nick.

I guarantee your gonna get compliments on the form fit hoses on an engine swap car. :bow

Could you define "mediocre results," in respect to your previous radiator? The reason I ask is I just dropped in a Griffin 19x22 universal fit and hoping it's going to be enough for the 408. It's a cross flow with 2 x 1.25" tubes.

My radiator was smaller than the one you just installed, had an e-fan (but no shroud) and the car would be 'ok' at sub 75-80 degrees outside. If I got stuck in traffic it would hit 220-225. Any warmer and if I got stuck in traffic I would need to pull over and shut if down and wait it out because it would over heat so I essentially couldn't drive the car to my office June-September.

Here I am after getting the car home in May on a 'hot' day after being stuck being slow moving traffic
