Yes I own a BMW poorly engineered motorcycle...but there's good news

Welcome truth back

In 2006 BMW came out with a new engine type. The slant four. I bought one used in Dec'07. Now usually BMW is known for their engineering. Boxer engine a staple in the motorcycle world. My prior BMW a flat four 'brick' was sold from 1980- 2010. But this 'new' slant four has already been replaced after just 5 years. Me thinks they had had enough and started over...now there will be a slant six. But alas I still have the four....with all its problems.

Poor transmission..shifts worse than a 1900s tractor
Final drive can fail without proper maintenance...BMW said design was maintenance free
Software for fuel delivery is...well has problems...can you say full throttle with no control?
Timing chain stretches and can grenade the engine
recall for a suspension part that can corrode and break

Well the transmission I can live with
Final drive I relube every time I change oil
Software has been updated....but still stalls occassionally after a hot run

Good news is that the recall is being taken care of and
although the timing chain isn't a recall nor will BMW fix it past warranty I do have a extended warranty (PO bought it) which will cover the cost of repair. :yah

I only have 33k miles on it but its a great bike...all things considered :shrug :thu

Wife and I will be doing another vacation this year on it. :steer :thu :yah

I had this bike for a couple years, but didn't get to ride it as much as I would have liked. No fun to ride with Houston traffic. I was always worried about something breaking on it~ probably best that I sold it! Shame to hear about the BMW problems!

Sounds like it's time to trade it in on a S1000RR :thu

Yep...same basic bike albeit the sport version with higher HP. Same design flaws. But they still make it.

I have never had a new model bike or a sport bike, but i do have a 46 Indian chief.
Heres my engine porn, if you like old things.
Its been away for 3 years being rebuilt, including getting new heads cast.

I think he did a great job rebuilding and detailing the carburettor

Sweet.....I rode one close to that while in Tucson back in '82. A neighbor had 4 restored Indians.
