My new black license plates

I ordered a set of reproduction black license plates from a German vendor on eBay for my '67. I decided to pull the trigger and see how they match up to the originals. These plates are soooooo close to the originals as to be essentially indistinguishable. They're the same gauge of steel as the originals. There are a few "tells" if you compare side by side--the distance between the U and X, for example, is slightly different. The finish is glossier than original so they wouldn't pass for original unrestored, but the colors are spot-on. The dimensions, the weight, even the 63 in the corner are spot-on. The seller even gave the option of 63 with or without the apostrophe--they were originally made both ways. These are a vast improvement over the plastic coated aluminum repros I bought several years ago. Bottom line--NO ONE will be able to tell these are reproduction plates. Even me.

thekomat. He doesn't currently have any listings, you have to search completed listings under his name.

After some more inspection, I've found a way to tell the repros from the real ones without having to compare them side by side.

Since he has no listings I cannot order myself. I have e-mailed him.
Thanks Frank

I doubt it, they haven't done anything about the counterfeit sticker sellers for years now. They won't even take down the person selling current license plate renewal stickers, violating eBay's own policy. Also, it's still early morning in Germany.

Yesterday I alluded to a way to tell the repros apart from genuine plates. In this picture of a genuine plate you can see impressions from the number and letter dies, vertically on either side of the 1 and horizontally at the top of the characters. They're not always this prominent. These are completely absent from the repros. The streak at the top of the 1 is part of the run pattern in the paint--after the plates were painted, they were hung from the bottom left bolthole and the paint ran to the opposite corner.

His name is Greg...go figure.

He just finished a lot for prior orders. I will have to wait until the next lot he does. No problem

They know their time is limited before the combustion engine is outlawed in California, so it's not a lifetime commitment...;)
