Union Pacific # 4014 Big Boy

while it is an awesome sight...it is a monumental waste of money. We have two smaller steam engines in our company and they both require way too much maintenance and are not that reliable. Give me a diesel-electric any day! But the tourists and rail fans (foamers) certainly love the steam. The number of guys that can operate them are dwindling quickly too. I am asked on a regular basis why we don't run steam in our freight business. I remind them that it is a BUSINESS.

Come on Ken or should I say “Debbie Downer”, this one is just for fun.

I would guess the newer loco is there in case the steamer dies. It was silent as it went by.

That is exactly why the diesel is there.....they don't even trust their multi-million dollar rebuild to be reliable enough to make it on its own.

Randy’s Flamingos walking on your lawn?

Yeah, it’s not like they’re complicated to run or historical or anything.

I just don’t have the passion/interest in them since it is the industry I have spent the majority of my life in. The foamers can really work on your last nerve when they talk out of their ass about their love of steam!

Damn....Ken's sounding an awlful lot like me.
Dang Kids get of my lawn!....Back in my day.........We had to WALK to school, uphill both ways.... o_O

Its just a business Ken has been in all his life.
Now if we all started talking smack about baking cupcakes then Mark would chime in big time.;)
