3M tape for 68 GT badges and quarter reflectors

Has anybody tried using 3M double sided emblem tape for GT badges and the quarter reflectors on a 68?

I've got all new sheet metal that I don't want the body guy to drill for these, so I'd prefer to use the 3M tape. He just got the parts and is concerned about the back side of them, which I have not seen myself, working with the tape.

If you've done this, let me know how you did it and how it turned out.

Or should I just have the paint guy drill the holes?

thanks

I used 3M Emblem glue. If you want the part number, I can get it for you. It's clear and is what OEM's use to glue on decals. It worked great for the GT "MUSTANG" lettering on my 66.

I would greatly appreciate that.

I'm really hesitant to drill the holes. I like the idea of having options, namely, the option of either leaving them off entirely for now, or putting them on to see how I like them, or taking them back off and not having any affect on the paint.

This emblem glue, is it something that can be removed with something like adhesive remover, or anything else harmless to paint?

I used the glue as well on the MUSTANG letters on the trunk. Its a repop decklid and repop letters, they lined up like DooDoo. I cut the pins off a few and used the emblem glue.

Nice idea sticking on the badges, instead of drilling holes. Then, you can change things if you wanted sometime in the future.

If you use adhesive tape, you might consider painting/dyeing the edges of the white 3m tape before you peel and stick them to the body. That way the white tape won't be so noticeable between the body and the emblem.

It used some 3m tape to stick an emblem on my tool box, and I always notice the darn white tape. Then again, maybe I'm too picky.

Won't be long and the fun of putting your car back into driving shape starts!!!... just in time for the spring driving season.

It's not mustang related...but when I had my truck repainted, and they used the 3M tape to adhere some of the molding. It lasted about a month, then it started sagging and at least one of them fell off. I took it back, and had them redo it. They used some adhesive, that's no longer available for purchase to re-stick them. If I ever have to take them off, it will take the paint off with it.

Personally, I'd never trust the tape to keep the emblems on.

Sounds like the adhesive glue may be a better option, but does it eliminate the option of removing emblems withOUT damaging the paint sometime in the future?

I'd say that's iffy - we make simlar polymers, and they cannot be dissolved once cured. However, the data sheet says the peel strength is low when heated, so it might be possible to get it off with a heat gun and then buff the residue off.

180 Peel Strength-Cloth/Steel
Time Test Temperature Value (Lbs/In. Width)
1 Day 75°F 13
3 Weeks 75°F 44
After 3 Weeks -30°F 22
After 3 Weeks 180°F 7

So how about if I fill in the back side of the GT badges and the quarter reflectors with something like :nick or fiberglass resin, sand smooth, and then use the transfer tape?
