4.6 Triton can be a PAIN!

Ponyman66

Yak, yak, yak
I love my truck and it's been pretty darn reliable. It's a 2001 F150 that I got used in '05, but only had 23k on it. During the last month or so it would stumble and hesitate a little when cruising. There were no codes captured...ugghhh. I had planned on just cleaning and lubing the Idle Air Comp Valve (something I had to do at around 75k). Last week while running errands it just started running like crap and the "service engine" light came on. When I got home I pulled the codes and it had a misfire on #6 cyl...finally a code! I've had to replace on coil pack on it before, but it tripped the "check engine" light that time. Hmmm. :confu

Since the truck now has 102k I figured I'd just replace the plugs, all the coil packs (since I figured they'd start failing over the next year or so...and they have to come off for plugs anyhow!). What a royal PITA! The #4 and #7 cylinders are the worst! I thought #8 would be a bear, but it wasn't too bad. The #7 cyl is a bear because the regulator is almost over the top of it. It took just over 2 hours to replace everything and clean the IACV. When I fired it up it had a slight rough idle, but it quickly smoothed out. A quick road test and it was running smooth as silk. I sure am glad to be done with that. Hopefully I'll have a new truck long before I have to go through that again!

p.s. My buddy has a '97 with a 4.6 that he's been asking about a time to do a "plug changing party". I can now say I will supervise, but HE'LL definitely be doin' the wrenching...and cursing! LOL

I was talking with my uncle today and he has had to replace two spark plugs after they blew out on his truck. He used a helicoil to repair it. you should be happy that did not happen to you. He has a van and the engine had to be removed for the repair.

I'm all too aware of the threads stripping on the Triton motors. Since this was the first plug change on it, EVER, trust me I had my fingers crossed the WHOLE time!! LOL

p.s. Could/would a moderator move this thread to Gum Flappers? I apologize, I thought I had posted it there! :hide

I've done tons of them, they get easier after doing enough of them.

I know your pain, I had an 01 F150 also. I have an Expy now with the 5.4 and had to change the intake manifold, that was a PIA!
The intake had a crack in it and the antifreeze was nasty. I cleaned the throttle body up too while it was apart and changed the injectors, EGR, plugs, coils, etc.
