65/66 Side Scoops

Ok, so, I have a set of crappy fitting fiberglass side scoops like came on the GT350.

I've had them a hundred years and am finally going to put them on since I have the interior mostly out right now. Where along the "C" shape of the scoop should I drill? I was thinking two in the rear, two on the top, and two on the bottom, but as I was test fitting tonight, I can tell there's basically no way to get the back edge to attach. The fiberglass basically sits flat, where ideally it would jut out away from the scoop, fitting into the concave shape on the side of the car. It is also a very thin surface, with not a lot of material to go drilling.

If I do 3 across the top, and 3 across the bottom, and none across the rear, will that be sufficient to hold it in place?

I know the "traditional" way of attaching them is to use pop-rivets, but I think I'm going to drill them, and slide some small bolts coming out, and put a little two-part epoxy to hold them in place, so they basically act like studs. Then I'll drill matching (slightly enlarged, for adjustment) holes on the body, and slide the "studs" into the drilled holes, and put nuts and washers on the back side.

I dunno if I explained that where it's understandable, but I have very little experience with body work, so what problems am I setting myself up for with this approach? Poprivets aren't an acceptable option, because I need them to be fairly easily removed for when it's time to paint the car. That's a long way off, but I still want to get these fitted and ready to go.

Let me know if I'm being stupid here.

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

Did you eyeball the side scoops on my car during MBBII? Mine are riveted on.... 3 on top and 3 on bottom.

I noticed the rivets but didn't sit and fine tooth comb the scoops like I should have. Was it a pain to get them installed or was it pretty straight forward? Like all glass, mine seem to be a little warped and not the snug awesome fit I would have hoped for.

But 3 on top 3 on the bottom will make it easier for me, I think. You think I'm making a mistake trying to use bolts instead of rivets?

Steve

Not so much a mistake as creating more work.

The FG should be flexible enough that the top and bottom edge will pull the rear edge flush. The inner lip of the FG scoop may need to be massaged/trimmed to obtain a perfectly flush fit.

I fit mine and rivered them on before paint. Prior to paint, I removed them and painted the car and scoops seperately. Prior to assemblying the interior I re-installed the scoops.

It's that simple.

Cool. Guess I just didn't like the idea of riveting it on and then cutting it right back off before paint....but I guess it's not really a big deal.

Thanks for the input.

and then cutting it right back off before paint....

No cutting involved. The rivet heads can be drilled off from inside the car and the scoop easily removed.

Just make sure that when you're installing, you take into accoount that a drill will need to fit into that area to remove the rivet heads. I have a small 90* pneumatic drill that can access tight areas.

I just picked up a pair from MU today. Holding them up to the car, the fit looks decent. I plan on reworking them a bit though. I going to cut them down a little so they dont stick out so much.

Dave, did you apply them straight to the paint or did you put anything like a small bead of strip caulk between them and the body?

Straight over the paint. They don't/won't "move" once installed so is the there "rubbing" going on to wear down any painted surface.
