I have two of them and both have a set of smaller holes next to the main mounting holes. What are they for?

The holes the hangar wire is running through.

This must be from an original liteweight 68 Cobra Jet, like the ones that one the Winternationals that year.
It's obviously for weight reduction :bow

Hmmm.... that is odd Craig. I can't ever remember seeing those extra holes before. For lack of a better answer I'd have to say they are not from the factory.

But then I ask myself why anyone would ever drill those holes there? What purpose could they possibly serve? Weird.

Are there corresponding holes in the tailpanel support?

I took a look and I have one just like it on my '67 vert, but my '68 coupe (very early production), doesn't have these holes. Both were made at SJ. Can't tell from the appearance / location on the vert just what purpose the holes would have served. I wonder if these are ZZ parts? If not, they may have been common on a Ford, but served a purpose on another model.

My only guess is they would be used for fixturing to make sure the assembly worker got the latch in the right place (more or less) before driving in the mounting screws.
