68 fuel tank questions

A while ago I bought a replacement 68 15 gallon fuel tank. I haven't installed it yet but I heard you can put a 70+ 20 gallon fuel tank in in place. Is this correct? Living in Southern California and having to drive to get to everything it would definitely help if I can use a 20 gallon tank to hopefully get at least a 200 mile range out of it.

Thank you in advance for all the information.

I believe they bolt in but there needs to be a small mod to the angle of the filler neck based on the taller tank. The larger tank sits higher in the floor. Not sure it can be compensated for with the rubber hose.

Pete is correct, but I think they are 16 and 22 gallons. Put a broom handle in the filler neck and bend it back a little towards the taillight panel. to get the angle correct/closer.

Not sure there but I would guess they are close enough to make it work. Would be nice to have more range for sure, especially with the engine I have. It LOVES gas....

I put a 22-gallon tank in Trouble. You have to tweak the fuel filler neck a bit and be sure to put in a matching size fuel gauge. The 22-gallon tank sits about 2 inches higher.

did you just run an after market fuel gauge? am I wrong in my assumption that the stock fuel gauge will just show its full for a lot longer period of time as the only difference?

I installed a 22 gallon tank in my 67. It fit's perfectly in the trunk floor. The 22 gallon tank is about 2" taller, which makes it's about even with the trunk floor on the left & right sides.

I used the largest size pvc pipe that fit into the tank filler opening to bend it back to align better with the metal tail light to tank filler pipe. I wouldn't use a broom stick because the small diameter of the broom can easily make your filler inlet deform out of round. I also had to shorten the metal tail light to tank filler neck by about 2-3 inches to have enough room to fit the rubber connector hose.

Here's the only pic I have of the installed tank. Unfortunately, with my diamond plate subfloor you can't see the tank, but you can see how the filler neck aligns with the tank inlet.

I'm installing a 20 galloner in Shag but also ran a 69/70 fuel line with anticipations of having Maier sub frame connectors installed.

great set ups. I think a 22 gallon tank will suit my needs. Every extra bit of gas helps out in a thirsty car. what gauge metal would be used to make a cover like the diamond plate? I want to keep the trunk usable until it is ever really restored so for now I wouldn't mind making a cover and maybe using bed liner to cover the trunk in to protect/keep things rolling around and making noise/keep from rusting. Would using the 69/70 fuel filler neck be possible? or do I just need to bend a 68's? mine looks a little rusty inside so if I was going to replace it now would be the time.

My diamond plate is aluminum, which is about 1/8" thick. Picked up a 4'x8' sheet from a local metal supplier; then, cut to fit.

I don't know if a 69/70 filler pipe would work. I just cut down my 67 filler pipe to fit. Unless you don't have an original filler pipe, why spend the money?

did you bend the diamond plate to match up the screw holes or is that a cut and weld job?

Nope. I cut the diamond plate to fit the trunk floor, and it's flat... no bends at all.

Near the trap door and at the tail light panel, the diamond plate is screwed directly to the sheet metal floor. However, I used some 1"x2" blocks to fill/brace the middle; then, screwed the diamond plate through the wood and into the sheet metal floor.
