68 steering question

I had a customer stop into my shop with a 68 coupe with some steering issues. She had brought it to another garage for some work and an alignment and now has new problems. Its a 289 with power steering. The car has a slight resistance when turning to the left and is really easy to the right. It almost feels like the car is pulling to the right but it's really just because its so easy to turn right. I only had time to do a quick check over. The front end was tight, it had new power steering lines and new ram. I have the car coming back in about a week to really look it over. I'm not familiar with the early power steering cars. Does this sound like a control valve issue or could it be in the steering box?

Thanks

I'm no expert but if the ram and lines were changed it could have some air in the lines effecting the control valve?

Is there a bleed procedure? The work that was done at the other shop was over a year ago, the car has been driven some since. Wouldn't the air work its way out? I don't know if I should say its slight resistance to the left, more like half assist from the power steering and to the right is full assist. I'm still leaning towards the control valve.

I would think by now the air would be out. maybe control valve. I rebuilt one once, it was not fun.

If there's air still in the system, it's usually hard steering both ways.
Three or four days later of using the setup and pretty much all the
bubbles should have worked their way out but I've seen it worse.
(takes about 3 or 4 laps at Willow Springs to get things back to
normal on my race car- steering feels sluggish and heavy until all
air is worked out)
This link shows the flow and operation. I think around page 18/19.
There's a chance your valve isn't quite "right."

The next step is to replace the control valve. The box wouldn't be stiff one way and not the other in my opinion. I would get a new valve instead of trying to do a rebuild.

The system is self bleeding. Two full turns each way should do it. It may spit out a few bubbles after that but the level in the pump won't change.

Thanks for the info guys! I'll speak with the customer later today and get a control valve here before the next appointment,

I had a simular problem with a guy who owned a 65 convertible which had a total ground up restoration.
After close inspection , I noticed that they had switched the tie-rod combination left to right.
When steering to the left , the left tie-rod combination (which was actual for the right side ) was pressed to the power steering valve.

Don't know if this is of any help.

BTW , did you find the problem meanwhile ??
