what alignment or purpose is the adjustment in the strut rods for? What effect does this have on trying to do a DIY alignment at home. I'm trying to rough align for some test runs.I understand the purpose of the rod, just not the adjustment. Any good dummy sites would help also

The strut rod adjustment short/long is used to set the caster + / - . If you think about it your pulling or pushing the LCA forward/backwards with the strut rod. An adjustable strut rod makes this much easier/faster and more accurate than the rubber busings which can smash and stretch during adjustment and during braking, acceleration and cornering allowing your alignment to change while driving.

Here's an article from this month's MM&F that does a good beginner job of explaining. I think I'm going to invest ~$100 in alignment tools and do my own as that's less than 1 shop alignment would cost. With adj. strut rods, roller perches and locked eccentric kit I think I could get a repeatable setting.
