70 rear valance

so im mounting the rear valnce and rear dont like the seams or the screws. is there a reason that this is removable? and has anyone ever welded this thing on? what problems would this cause?
 
The PO of my '66 at least filled the joints. I don't know if he welded it or what but in 8500 miles, there has been no problem. The reason for being a separate section was most likely ease of install/repairs. Imagine welding it on the assembly line or having the sides joined prior to assembly. Could be done but it also allowed for different model changes in those years that have different designs there. Other than that guess, I have no idea.
 
Actually Rick, I didn't. I just made new mounting points on the valance. I did not use/like the stock ball/pivot latching mechanism that was stock.

Plus with aftermarket quarter panels (at least on the 70's) - there is no indentated area for that fastener to recess into, thus not letting the valance sit flush.

First I removed all of the existing bracketry on the valance. Second I drilled 2 holes on the sides - one at the top, one further down near the bottom. Fed two carriage bolts, from the outside, through those holes and welded in place to replicate internal "studs". Ground the heads off of the carriage bolts and smoothed the outside of the valance.

I next drilled matching location sets of holes - but larger diamter (to aid in proper alignment) - in the bottom of the new quarter panel to facilitate installation of the new studs.

Add lock-nuts inside, snug tightly and you have a super fit/finish. No need to weld together IMO.

Ooops, I looked all over for a picture of the rear of your car. I remember we had the discussion about filling the body lines by the rear glass, just thought you had filled them all, my bad.

And I love the way the filled valence looks on a 66! I will be sad the day that car gets sold, Pete. Wish I had the scratch to pick it up. Also, my wife informed me that the inn is full and we have to get rid of a car before we buy another. I suggested we sell her VW Cabby and she hit me. Then I said we could get rid of her minivan. She didn't like that either.

I can't win.
 
i got them welded up but no pics today...maybe tomorrow....
nice video btw, were those chrome bumpers that you painted? if so what prep work was done?
 
Yes, it was a standard reproduction rear bumper that was sanded with.... if I remember correctly.... 80 grit.... to scuff the chrome..... then primed and painted.

Exactly how i did my 71 rear bumper. Works well.
 
I also like the look of the rear bumper painted. I will do the same. I plan to smooth the bumper though to get rid of the bolt studs. Did you weld the whole seam of the valence panel or tack weld it and fill with bondo? I was thinking about tack welding but don't want moisture to get in the crack behind the bondo and rust out.
 
It was welded along the entire length of the valance to rear qtr. joint and then filled/smoothed with kitty hair.
