8-inch Equa-Loc Rarity/Desirabilty/Practicality?

I'm considering using my original 1965 3.50 Equa-Loc chunk as a core for a rebuilt 8-incher that employs a 4-spider posi set up and the more-modern "waffle ribs" casting. I'd get only $75 for it as a core.

Doing a search on these units, I'm finding that they are getting tough to find and assuming they are serviceable (I believe that mine is) -- they may be worth quite a bit more to a restorer who is looking for an original-style 8-inch...I'm also thinking that perhaps I should keep it for my own use in another project.

I know these things aren't that great as far as limited-slip units go, but I may want to keep for a rainy day for my own (or someone else's) project use. I've sold peg-leg 3.00 8-inch center sections for more than its core value.

What do you guys think...will I regret using this thing as a core? What do I look for when I assess its roadworthiness?

Don't use that equa-lok as core. You can get a few hundred dollars for it. I have one in my car and they are serviceable. If you are interested in selling it I have a friend that would buy it. He's looking for one.

My '66 fastback came equipped with the Equa-Loc. I'm restoring the car (different car from my coupe project for those familiar), so the Equa-Loc is staying. The parts weren't difficult to find (predominately new clutches), but they weren't on every street corner either! With that said, for a modified car I wouldn't go with it if I had other choices. If you want something more like original I'd at least upgrade to as Traction-Loc. Even that isn't as good an upgrade as more modern units that are plentiful. An Auburn or a TrueTrac are much better choices.

I certainly wouldn't give up the Equa-Loc. As you've stated, they're getting very hard to come by and they are definitely worth more than a core charge to someone looking for one!

Thanks to everyone that offered their views. I think the bottom line is that the Equa-Loc chunk -- is worth more as "swap meat" than it is as a core. Who knew?

I'll take it with me to a local large indoor swap meet in February and If I don't get offers of at least 200 bucks -- I will keep it for another project.

IME -- Always easier to sell something heavy like that locally. Should I find a home for it, it should help me finance the purchase of the 4-spider chunk. If not, it will become part of my "Museum" in the back of the garage.

Thanks again, everyone!
