92 F350

Always on vacation!
Ok, I sold my 7.3 powerstroke and got an old work truck. I don't need a commuter vehicle or traveling vehicle and still need a truck from time to time.

This truck is a 92 F350 4x4 with a 460 CID, Auto trans. the thing drives good but after a drive down to Hurricane today with the family to kind of shake it out a bit.

I found the usual rattles and loose interior parts which are easy enough to address. I do need to find some new front door glass for it a the glass in it is scratched.

Anyway, the questions are;

It seems to be very gutless! Going up hill empty it slows considerably. WTH is going to happen when I have a trailer behind it.

I read on the 460 forum that a 180 degree thermostat will help, but I am wondering if maybe the final drive ratio may be to high. It has 35" tires on it and is bone stock except for a 3" lift. It seems that even with the overdrive off and going up the hill that I take in the 65 at 80+ and in the Durrango at 80 and every other car I have at 80, this beast slows and the pedal is on the floor. Speed limit is 75. This thing doesn't seem to wind up very well. I do have to remind myself that it is a big block and not my little 289.

Should I change the exhaust? What about a chip? Maybe the air filter is too restrictive?

The other major issue I have with it is the AC at low vacuum blows through the defroster and the fan is missing a speed. I know how to change the fan, but the vacuum issue is a puzzle to me. I wonder if there is a vacuum canister under the hood or the vacuum pot under the dash?

Any constructive advise on how to make this a better rig would be appreciated. An no I am not going to find a donor Cummins and swap the engine. I wouldn't be opposed but I have a project hot rod and don't need anything else, I need to finish the 65. Thus inexpensive solutions are best since every dollar spent on the truck is not going to go toward the 65.

Thanks,

Mel

Some things crosses my mind.
Can it be that the cats are a bit clogged due to a bad ignition in the past?
If you overseized the wheels , then you have to change the rear diff ratio IMO.

Just some thoughts.

Mel:

At the risk of stating the obvious, have you given it a tune-up including a fuel filter? If so, I agree with Bruno on a plugged cat as a likely culprit.

I agree, do a tune up. It could be one of the usual suspects, bad wire, bad plug, fuel occlusion and so on. Exhaust like said needs to be free as these engine like to breath. Also the oversize tires will drag it down too. It should have about 400 ft/lbs torque and that should move it pretty good. On the tires, if you "think" it's the tires, try to borrow a set and see what the differ is. I've had many of these engines in 350 chassis that would weigh in right at 8000 lbs empty and they would really haul the mail.

The thing I was always told about the 460...and found so true every time...it will move the world once you get traction....just don't expect it to do it fast.

The 35" tires will slow things down a bit based on the final gearing. If the drive train is stock, adding the big tires hurts the power.

The a/c defaults to the defrost when there is a vacuum leak in the supply line from the engine to the a/c controls or in the switch itself. A vacuum leak may also lower the power also.

A tune up always help on any new purchase.

Mel the missing "speed" setting on the a/c fan is is most likely the resistor. For some reason they aren't as durable anymore like the old stuff was.

Is it fuel injected? If so, the injectors may also be worn. I'd put a cat back system in it from MagnaFlow. They are great.

I'd also suspect the cats.

Thanks guys.

I was think some of the same things, just wanted to know I was going the right way. hadn't thought to do a full tune up on a freshly rebuilt engine, but I can check and I also left that out, sorry. Who knows I may find something they missed.

The vacuum leak is interesting to me. I forgot that especially in the new computer aged engines vacuum leaks are big isusses.

I really don't like the tires that are on it and will likely replace them, maybe with 285s which are IMHO a good compromise between the stock 265s and the 35s or 305s.

After re-reading your post I had a good think about your defroster issue. Either the hose is off under the dash or the blend door actuator has crapped out. Based on your description, I'd guess the blend door actuator.

BTW, I looked up the actuator and the resistor on Rock Auto. You can get both parts (Motorcraft!), for about $30...total! Good luck with your truck Mel..enjoy!

I'm still trying to wrap my head around you selling the 7.3 PS to buy an older V8 :wtf

It was very simple. I wanted some cash to paint the 65 for starters and due to having a company truck the 7.3 just sat around. It needed some major repairs like turbo, carrier bearing in the rear diff and a load of minor stuff. It seemed to be the more it sat the more that I had to fix.

So I got a gas truck to use around the property and allow me to paint the 65, which will be done by the time the 50th comes around in Vegas.

Then I want to sell the 65 and use that money to buy a 67/8 Camaro to build to be a pair with my 67 and fix some things on the 67. then the next bit of money will be for a 67/8 Mopar of some sort so I can have a set.

When the Durrango is paid off I plan a new truck, this time a Cummins.

I hope this helps you wrap your head around it better.

I think the 7.3's will climb in value. You can't find them around here, people have bought them up so they don't have to run a DPF. Talking about pulling down the mileage add a DPF.

OK, I kinda understand it.

No DPF in a Cummins!

I also thought about a cummins conversions and have a dream truck...but this will be considered only once the other projects are done.

I have part of a race car project in the shed, which will likely go away...:(

I have discussed with the wife freeing up the garage for projects both car and wood!

No shop yet and I would rather have completed projects than a shop!
