A day of reflection

70 years ago today, the bombing of Pearl Harbor took place and changed the world, day that so many lost their lives.

That day changed my granddad's life.

He was a civilian when Pearl Harbor happened but a few years later he found himself fighting the war in the pacific. He never said much about the war at all but walked with a limp for the rest of his life.

Sad that this is the last year they will have the survivor ceremony. Not many of them left. Some great men and women died there and many great people survived, hopefully we never forget what happened that day.

My father was one of many standing in line the next day to enlist. He joined the Marine Corps.

A day of reflection

My grandmothers next door neighbor was in the Navy stationed at pearl harbor. He would tell me stories about the day it all happened. Very intense. He married a local Hawaiian gal after the war, she would tell us how her and her classmates caught a one man sub one day as they were hanging out at the beach after school. We loved them both very much, Sue passed away five years ago and Adam passed away one year ago. Good people that this world could use more of.

Sadly, most of that generation is going or already gone.

My grand father passed away in 1998. Died of natural causes at home after being on hospice care for a while.

I was with him about a week before he passed away and one of the last things he ever said to me was take care of my grandmother who lived a good 10 plus years after he passed away. But that was the character he had...knew he was dying but was more concerned about Gram.

If you ever get to Oahu, go see the Arizona, Missouri and the Pacific Aviation Museum. The Pacific Aviation Museum is on Ford Island and one of their buildings still has bullet holes in it from the 'Day of Infamy'. Also, if you feel strongly, support the museums and make a donation.

I had the blessing of seeing my son recognized for his Eagle Scout Award on the fantail of the USS Missouri in 2008.......

I have to agree there.
Our visit to Pearl Harbour was the highlight of our trip to Hawaii.
We will return one day.
