A little peeved

As you know, back in November I started a new job working at a vet clinic. I was getting 26hrs a week + weekends. Well there's another tech working there, a guy, who's been there like 2yrs. Last year he was going to college part time but this semester, he's going full time. Well the office manager told me this and said she'll be increasing my hours to help cover his hours that he can't work. Ok great! No mention of hiring anyone else. She even said if anyone calls, to tell them we're not hiring.

Well Saturday I got a new schedule and there's a new person on it. Ok cool, she hired someone else. Then I looked and noticed I went from 26hrs a wk (not including weekends) down to 23.5hrs. I lost a couple hours. Then I counted this new girls hours... 35hrs a week. :wtf I can assume she's like me and the other guy and gets weekends as well which would put her at more hours. Even if she doesn't work weekends, she still has more hours than me.

I was talking about it with my husband we both think it's a little screwed up. Especially since she told me she'd be increasing my hours. I doubt the new schedule is a typo and I'm suppose to work the 35hrs since I asked her about it to double check what hour I'm suppose to come in on Monday. Maybe this girl worked there in the past and had to quit due to school/job conflict and that's why she gets the most hours? Maybe she has more job experience or a 2yr vet tech degree? :shrug I could see how either of those would trump me in pay.. but hours? Especially since the manager knows I have no schedule conflict. I can show up at any time, any day, any weekend. Either way, I still feel a little cheated since I was told I would be getting more hours. If by chance I got a little raise (I'll have been working there 3 months on Feb 4th so a little raise might be happening) then maybe it wouldn't feel so bummed about it. But she hasn't mentioned anything about a raise. Even when I was hired, she never mentioned after 3 months or 6 months there would be a raise. I'm sure they give raises..the other guy said if you show up on time, work hard, and do your job good she'll give you a raise. He gets $9/hr and started out like me at $7.25/hr.

My husband said if it were him... he'd started looking for a new job because that is just :censoreded up. It's hard finding vet clinic jobs around this town, and I told him that. Plus any extra money is always good to have to help pay bills. He said here next month, extra money from my job to pay bills wouldn't be all that important since his VA benefits increased and he gets BAH from his GI stuff for attending college. Any money I get will be back to Gertrude stuff.

Ok hell... speaking of jobs. Manager just texted me and said the afternoon is dead slow (aka no appts) and the guy tech can handle it and will call me if it gets busy - meaning I don't have to go in today. This is not uncommon. When days are dead slow, no point having 2 people there standing around doing nothing. I don't mind that especially since prioroty is given to the guy who's worked there 2yrs.

Anyway.. I don't know if I should bring this up with the manager about losing hours or not. I'd like to have more hours or atleast stay at the 26hrs I had, but on the other hand, less hours does mean more time to work on Gertrude, spend with husband, kids, etc.

Chill already. Maybe the new girl has more hours scheduled this first week to get enough time in to be properly trained, etc. They might want her around to see everything and meet/work with everyone. Once that gets handled you might see your hours bump up and hers decrease.

Or...maybe you need to start looking for another job because this may be a sign they aren't satisfied with the present staff? Don't know, not there. Just putting it out there to think about...not to give you something to stew over!

Knowing that I haven't worked in a clinic in over 10yrs I've questioned my skills/abilities. There was nothing bad said. She's complimented me how it was nice having an employee who didn't need to be told what to. Meaning always keep the the laundry going, keeping things cleaned, stocked, checking on animals, etc. I find something productive to do if there's nothing to do during downtime so I'm not just standing there doing nothing. I talk with clients as she said client relationship is important. Be their friend, earn their trust so they trust you with their pets sort of thing. I've never been late. I'm always early. Never leave work early - unless its dead slow and I'm told I can go. Only asked for one day off of work and that was for a funeral for a friends 4yr old son who had died. I don't see why she wouldn't be satisfied with my performance? :shrug

As for the possibilites of the new girl having more hours for training. Doubt it. When I was hired, not having worked in over 10yrs at a clinic... I was tossed into the job without any training. I was handed a packet of 15 pages of how things are done there and told to read it and it says on the first page, everything you need to know is in the packet and if you have any questions, look in the packet before you go ask her or the Dr questions. There was no 'training'. lol

If I talk to her and ask why the cut on hours, she may be understanding and give me more or back to the 26hrs.... or she could fire me. She has no patience, and a very short fuse and the littlest of things will piss her off. Seriously. She kicks & smacks dogs if they whine while we're trying to do stuff to it (get blood, give vaccines, etc). Not professional. Kind of ironic since she says customer relationship is important huh? Staff should never hit or mistreat a clients animal. Sometimes, restraint is necessary to keep yourself from being bit or scratched, but kicking or smacking isn't. I told my husband about that and he said that's pretty messed up, and it is. I know I should be lucky to even have a job when so many out there can't find work, but between how things are done there, things I'm ashamed to even have witnessed, and the cut back on hours...

well hell if I know what to do. :Katcof

I'd smack her if I seen her kicking a dog. I would confront her and if she blows up, tell the clients what she does to their dogs behind closed doors. Probably should tell them anyways.

Oh Hell No !! :rant............you might want to reconsider how bad you need that job. I would walk (after doing all I could to get her fired)

She wouldn't be bang'n the Vet if she's in jail for animal cruelty.

She can't be fired. She's been banging the Vet for 4 yrs and counting. Been working there 18yrs so far.

Well duh, I see how you could possibly advance also! (just kidding--)

..or in the hospital getting her jaw put back on the right side of her :censored face.

Met the new girl today. Turns out she's the managers daughter. That would explain it. She did work there.... once. 4 years ago right out of high school. Said she doesn't even remember much anymore from when she did work there. She and Mommy manager were sitting in the office for a good bit while mommy went over the employee packet, same one I got, with her. And when they were done with that... she didn't do shit. Didn't do shit this morning either.
I got to work at noon and laundry wasn't done. Cages were dirty. Surgery room wasn't cleaned. Nothing restocked. And although she was scheduled to work work until 5:30, she and mom left around 4pm leaving me to do the closing - clean the whole clinic, feed/walk the dogs/cats, take out trash. The only thing I saw her do today was wipe down the tables in the exam rooms.

Checked the weekend schedule we have in the backroom. A calendar that has who works what weekends & who has to go in and feed the animals.

Her:
Jan 28th - 7:30-noon then go back in at 5pm to feed/clean dirty cages. Usually takes about 30 min
Jan 29th - Feed. Goes in for 30 min at 8am then again at 5pm for another 30min.
Feb 4th - 7:30-noon then go back in at 5pm
Feb 5th - Go in at 8am then again at 5pm
Feb 18th 7:30-noon then go back in at 5pm
Feb 19th Go in at 8am then again at 5pm

Me...
Feb 25th 7:30-noon then go in and feed at 5pm
Feb 26th Go in at 8am then again at 5pm

She already gets 35hrs a week and then Saturdays and Sundays.

:wtf :shrug

You cannot win at office politics. Keep doing what you are doing for a couple of weeks, bite your tongue, and let her dig her own grave. If the hole ends up being for you see my first sentence.

I'd put a box of crabs in her seat and laugh all the way home.
