Alternator wiring...

lleno

Member
I have a new alt. harness, and was wondering if it is difficult to wire it up with the alt. in the car. I cannot recall the position of the alt in relation to the engine. Is it easier to take the alt out and do it??[My car is in storage....]

It's usually a pretty confined space on the back side of the ALT and the front of the cylinder head, but it can be done with the ALT in place, just be sure to disconnect the POS BAT terminal before sticking a wrench back there.

You may find it easier overall to loosen the ALT upper mount bolt a few turns, remove the ALT adjustment/mount bolt, slip the belt off and rotate the ALT upwards to gain more clearance. Either way, disconnect the BAT POS cable.

Get a flashlight and a mirror. On the back of most alternators, the posts are usually marked: BAT, F, S, Gnd.
