The Bay County Sheriff’s Office has been contacted by two condominium owners and one motel owner on Panama City Beach about a recent scam they have experienced involving one man—Jody Dobbs, also known as Jody Leigh Herrington. All three were approached by this man who claimed to have twenty million dollars to invest in the purchase of motels or condominiums.
However, prior to purchase, Dobbs insisted he wanted to stay in the penthouse or motel room to check out the property prior to making an offer to purchase. In each case, Dobbs has stayed on the property for a weekend or a week, sometimes bringing family with him, and then disappears without making any offer to purchase a property or pay for his stay.
Dobbs is currently wanted on a warrant out of San Padre Island, Texas, for Theft. He is described as a white male, 5’10”, and 175 pounds with blonde hair and blue eyes. His DOB is 12/13/72. Sheriff McKeithen believes that Dobbs is still in this area and may attempt this scam on another property owner. Sheriff McKeithen encourages any property owner to request a financial statement from any individual expressing an interest to invest in beach property to confirm that, in fact, that person is a qualified buyer for the property.
