Another good reason to use DOT 5...

So that you don't totally lose it when the brand new wheel cylinder fails as you are bleeding the brakes on a totally detailed rear axle, ruining only the brake shoes and not the paint.

Now that I am getting the car mechanically complete (with no interior), I am encountering all the new but defective parts I installed months ago but could not test. This is soooo frustrating! Particularly so when you buy the best parts made from the best vendors and you can not return them since it has been "too long" since you bought them.

I wish I had gone with DOT5 on my car. I had a fitting that leaked at the proportioning valve, which dripped down the rear inner fender, down the frame rail and all over the steering and crossmember. Ruined all of the paint and I had just repainted the entire front end. :fbomb :fbomb
 
I will be removing my master in order to install my clutch master cylinder. Can I change to DOT 5 after it's already had the DOT 3 in the lines previously? I've read that it should only be used when using all new brake parts.
 
Yes, it can be done... and I have done it in the past. You do NOT want to mix DOT 3 and DOT 5, so to effect the change it is best to flush the system. I used denatured alcohol to completely flush out the DOT 3 and then went with a liberal flush through of DOT 5 on my previous project... the current project is an entirely new setup. I don't know if it matters, but I flushed the system in the reverse order of bleeding the system (e.g. shortest line to longest line).

If, for some reason, you want to switch the other way it is a bit harder - silicone based fluid is harder to completely flush out.

I simply flush extra DOT5 through when I convert a car to DOT5.

You do not want to mix DOT3 and DOT5, obviously, but it is not the end of your braking system. When combined DOT3 simply wins.

Do a thorough job and don't be paranoid.

+1; when I did my conversion to front discs (11.25" from SoT) and replaced all of the front lines, I just pushed out the old fluid (DOT 3 or 4) with DOT 5.
