Anybody done the Explorer Diy 8.8?

Ran across the post from 67FSTBKRestoMod on the Explorer DIY 8.8 rear-end, instead of bringing back a 3 year old post I was wondering for those that did this does the drive shaft run through the center of the tunnel on the 65 - 66? I was curious about the pinion off-set ad how it lines up with the drive shaft. Thinking about taking my Versailles 9inch out, too much unsprung weight for me!
Thanks

The yoke does not sit dead center on the rear end. If memory serves it favors one side by about 3/4". Which should not be an issue at all. Many people report using a stock explorer rear end on 67 & up cars with more than a 2" offset and no problems or vibrations.

Is there that much of a savings to make it worth it? I would think the removable carrier and pressed on axle bearings on the 9" would make it more desirable than the explorer rear end. Starting from scratch and on a budget then I would think the an 8.8 would be easier to find and worthy, but I don't think I'd give up 9" Versailles rear axle if you've already got a working one.

I was thinking if I got the rear end for a good price it may be worth it, the Versailles is working fine it just doesn't react well on bumps.
Thanks for the thoughts!

I've got the Explorer 8.8 under my car. I didn't modify it other than moving the perches. It sits offset as described. But, as others have said, if you have the 9inch I'd stay with it.
