Anyone here know T5 transmissions?

I dug into my T5 to change my speedo gear, it needed a 23 tooth last year to calibrate properly but it ate that driven gear in no time flat, so I am going to go down to a 6 tooth drive gear I guess.

My big concern is I have a grind into 5th gear so I figured I would have a look.

I found this spring just sitting here, I am thinking that may have something to do with the grind into 5th gear?

I was just going to see if I could pop it back into place, but then I found this laying in there.

So I took the shift fork off, that pin did not want to budge, it took some work, but I got it out of the way and removed what I believe to be the 5th gear synchro assembly and found that the synchro blocking ring had some chew marks on it and the other two inserts were gone, I figure those inserts rolled around just enough to chew that ring up? I did find them at the bottom of the box when I took the top off and they look ok.

This looks kinda chewed up and I am guessing that its damaged from floating around unchecked. From what I know the trans has low miles and works perfectly except for that grind into 5th.

Here is the gear dogs/teeth. They are slightly chewed but I think I may try them again.

So my question is do you think I could just buy a new brass blocking ring and reassemble without major issue? Who sells these rings for the 5th gear, I dont want to buy a rebuild kit just for that one part.

Thanks.

There are two of those springs that hold those three dogs in that hub. I think you should be able to get all the parts you need from Modern Driveline. I had a similar "grind" going into fifth, now it won't stay in fifth at all. I am guessing I have a similar problem in the tranny. I also lost my speedometer but have not pulled the cable to see if it is the driven or drive gear.

I'd imagine the majority of your grinding was due to the dawgs and springs coming out of place. On my T5, some were chewed up like yours and I'm pretty sure I replaced the bad sliders. I didn't want to take a chance and have to dig back into it so replacing it was good insurance.

On the otherhand, my chevy's M21 had a few dinged teeth and I figured I'd try filing down the rough spots and see how it goes, but I haven't driven it yet to see how it's going to work out. I didn't want to invest much in the M21 since I'm not sure how much longer I'll be using it.

If you plan to keep it long term, it would be worth replacing for piece of mind...IMO.

Yeah, I cant argue that I should change out the mating gears but it was not grinding really bad yet and if I have to drop the trans again it wont kill me.

I wonder if NAPA sells those Blocking rings?
