seems easy enough, a little research recommended silica gel beads in a section of 4" pipe, inlet and outlet (with screens) on each end... maybe large ball valves top and bottom to make changing (for drying) the desiccant easier...

have you tried spraying color and clear with your setup?

Only about 50 times.....

I have no "drier" on my air system. Could it use one? Probably. Have I ever had water make it to the gun? Not that I could tell.

Aside from the tank's petcock drain, I have three low point drains as the air supply pipe runs around my shop. After the compressor has run awhile, condensation will build up in these low point drains.... and I empty them each night. When I'm painting I run the air supply hose through a cheap oil/water seperator and I've never had any issues shooting base/clear.

I'll try and get some pictures of the setup next time I'm out in the shop.

good to know, the pipe is probably acting as a dryer, my setup is similar... copper pipe around two walls of the garage, seems if I use the quick connect farthest from the compressor (35'), maybe I will be OK... if the dryer is cheap to build, it is good insurance though...

I have a 50 ft section of hose that is coiled up in a bucket of water and it runs to a water separator then it runs to a section of copper pipe that runs up the wall to another separator to my hose reel. When I spray i use the dryers but for the air tools I don't worry about it.
Not saying that your idea is bad I don't know how your humidity level is at your house but where I live it is a constant battle with water and a dryer goes bad in no time. That is why I started using a hose in the bucket of water. When I spray i also have bottles of ice that I put in the water to try to cool down and remove the moisture.

when i was blasting my car i took a 50 ft of hose, 5 gallon bucket, water, and threw them in an icebox... it gave me almost 45 min before the water made it to the blaster.
